COLLEGE NOTES

JANE M. HORNER AND SUMMER D. HOLDEN, both of Roanoke, recently were named 1996-97 Presidential Scholars at Emory & Henry College. Presidential Scholars, selected for their academic excellence and leadership ability, receive a $2,000 scholarship for their first year of college.

Horner, daughter of Ann-Marie Horner, is a graduate of Cave Spring High School.

Holden, daughter of Linda Jennings and Jack Holden, is a graduate of Salem High School.

VIRGINIA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE has named 10 Roanoke-area students to its president's honors list for the summer semester.

The students from Roanoke are: Emily Allie, Patrick Bullion, John Hodge, Michael Morris Jr., Dietrich Oelschlager, Laura Rosenbaum and Jeffrey Williams.

The students from Salem are: Toshie Imada and John Rodman.

Also, Claudia Spence from New Castle.

EILEEN HOUSTON AND GOANG NGUYEN, both of Roanoke, were recently named to the dean's list for the summer semester at Virginia Western Community College.

WILLIAM M. LEVEY of Roanoke was recently named to the Founder's Day list for semester II at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.

THE HOOKER EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION has awarded five Roanoke-area students college scholarships. Receiving scholarships are: Cao Nguyen, Dilinh Nguyen and Moc Chau Nguyen, the children of Trung Q. Nguyen and Phuong Thi Truong of Roanoke; and Mark A. Sweeney, son of Sandra and Lester Sweeney of Troutville.

MARK CRITZER AND RICHARD VON GEMMINGEN of Roanoke recently received bachelor of science degrees in electrical engineering technology from Old Dominion University through the Teletechnet program at Virginia Western Community College.

JENNIFER HALL of Salem has been awarded the Edith Stevens Award and an Advanced Honors Program Scholarship from Longwood College.

The Stevens award is given annually to a junior biology major, and the scholarship rewards academic achievement by an Honors student.

STEVEN T. TURNER, son of Shirley D. Turner of Roanoke, has been awarded the Martin G. Larrabee Award for undergraduate research in physics at Johns Hopkins University. Turner graduated in May with a degree in biophysics.

BRIAN WESLEY THOMPSON, son of Wesley and Jean Thompson of Roanoke, graduated with distinction from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in May with a degree in anthropology. He was named to the dean's list both semesters during his final year.

KATHERINE A. COMBITHS of Roanoke was inducted into the Virginia Delta Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national honor scholarship society, during the spring term at Roanoke College.

She is a graduate of Cave Spring High School.

RYAN JENNINGS, daughter of Geoffrey and Susan Jennings of Roanoke, was named to the dean's list at the College of William and Mary for the spring and fall semesters.

She was also inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta National Academic Honor Society for Freshmen and the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.

She is a 1995 graduate of North Cross High School.

JEFFREY OLSEN of Roanoke has been named to the dean's list at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
