The Rev. Jesse H. Powell has retired after 35 years as pastor of Brentwood Baptist Church at 3912 Plantation Road N.E. Powell, named pastor emeritus by the independent Baptist congregation, will continue to live in Roanoke and be available for revival meetings and supply work. He was succeeded in mid-August by the Rev. John Kohler, a 42-year-old native of Indiana. Kohler, who has been in the ministry for 19 years in Indiana and Missouri, most recently was at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Michigan City, Ind. He was educated at Oakland City University, Liberty Baptist Seminary in Lynchburg, and has studied at other seminaries.
He and his wife, Grace Kohler, have three children: Christi, 16; John, 10; and an infant son, James.
Jane Burks has joined the staff of Grace United Methodist Church in the Williamson Road area as director of music.
Nine New Life Temple members have won awards at a national competition in Dallas for members of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. They include Paul Causey, who placed third in the creative arts-photography division. He also is a member of the New Life Temple Teen Orchestra, which took third place in the instrumental music division and, along with William Wall, was recognized in the keyboard ensemble division. The orchestra is directed by Tom Adams. Other teen musicians are: Briana Harth, Elizabeth Martin, Elizabeth Wall, Jeremy Pohlman, Brian Scholz and Christina Vannatter. A total of $200,000 in scholarship money was awarded as prizes.
MUSICAL EVENTS
Brahms will be featured in the seasonal series of Con Spirito Concerts beginning Oct. 5 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, 2015 Grandin Road S.W. At the first of four programs, Samuel Kephart, viola, with Byron Petty and Shuko Watanabe, pianists, will be featured. Other programs will take place on Nov. 2, March 15 and April 12. At High Street Baptist Church, 2302 Florida Ave. N.W., Terri Ferguson Glover of Houston will present a recital Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. The program benefits the Adult Usher Board. The guest is a daughter of Bernard and Phyllis Morrison of Roanoke.
A musical benefit for the building fund of First Baptist Church of Buchanan will take place Sunday at 3 p.m. at the church on Main Street.
Evelyn Conner, Salem gospel singer, will perform Sunday at 7 p.m. at Preston Oaks Baptist Church, 102 Preston Ave. N.E. On Sept. 15, Conner will sing at 10 a.m. at the Sheraton Inn under sponsorship of Star City Church of Christ. That night at 6:30 she will be at First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke for a program. Offerings are received.
OUTREACH
CROP Walk '96, a six-mile hike through Southwest Roanoke to raise funds to combat world hunger and malnutrition, is scheduled Oct. 13. The Sunday afternoon fund-raiser supported by many from the religious community is from 1:30 to 4 p.m. It begins with registration in Wasena Park. This year's sponsors are Roanoke Area Ministries and Christ Lutheran Church. Call 890-3128 for registration forms, on which walkers list donors. One-fourth of the money raised remains in the Roanoke Valley.
Roanoke Valley Lutherans working through the LUCOM service agency paid for 36 needy children to attend a week at Camp Caroline Furnace in Shenandoah County this summer. Besides financial help, the campers received supplies and clothing as well as transportation.
SPIRITUALITY EDUCATION
Belmont Baptist Church, 825 Stewart Ave. S.E., is sponsoring four community spiritual growth classes for adults. "Experiencing God" is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays with "The Mind of Christ" offered on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. An additional Bible study has begun on Tuesday nights from 7 to 8:30, with a prayer group and study on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m.
Board Room Book Studies, to be held at noon from Sept. 17 to Nov. 19 in the Crestar Bank Building in downtown Roanoke, is a new ministry of St. John's Episcopal Church this year. The Rev. Carlotta B. Cochran, associate rector, will lead discussion of "Wrestling With Angels" for the first six weeks. "Servant Leadership: Workplace Integrity and Responsibility" will be the theme of the Rev. REVIVAL MEETINGS
The Rev. Edward Woodard, pastor of Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, will conduct revival services Sunday through Sept. 12 at Mason Cove Church of the Brethren, 3630 Bradshaw Road, Salem. Services will begin at 7 p.m.
Tent services led by the Rev. Tim Hamaker will be in progress Friday through Sept. 15 on U.S. 221 near Copper Hill on Bent Mountain. The Rev. L.D. Kempa, a supporter, said worship will begin at 7:30 p.m. except on Sundays, when it will start at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Grace Baptist Temple, 1527 Gilford Road N.W., has scheduled revival services Sunday through Wednesday led by the Rev. Dr. Raymond H. Saxe of Ann Arbor, Mich. The pastor of Fellowship Bible Church will preach on Sunday at 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. and on weeknights at 7. He is a tour guide in Israel and teaches annually in South Africa.

Early television preacher Roman Catholic Bishop Fulton J. Sheen will be recalled in a video series to begin Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. under sponsorship of the Catholic Historical Society of the Roanoke Valley. The society's headquarters are at 624 N. The Harry Y. Gamble Series, an annual preaching mission at Calvary Baptist Church that honors a former pastor, has been postponed from this fall to May 1997. The speaker then will be the Rev. Dr. John Killinger, a Presbyterian professor at the divinity school of Samford University. Killinger, a former Lynchburger, preached at Calvary 11 years ago.

A fall missions conference featuring workers in South America, Japan and Kenya, will be in session Wednesday through Sept. 15 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in America. The Rev. George Freeman, a former pastor of Woodlawn United Methodist Church, will return there for a 50th anniversary service Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. Freeman, who also served other Roanoke Valley congregations, is now superintendent of the Charlottesville District of the Virginia United Methodist Conference.
St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, an Anglican parish following the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, begins its fall program Sunday under its interim rector, the Rev. Joseph P. Miller, a retired priest. A family service at 9 is followed at 10:30 a.m. by Choral Eucharist. On Wednesday mornings at 9:30, a service of Low Mass will be held. The church is on Hershberger Road at Hubert Avenue.
BUILDING CHANGES
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Congregation in Salem has decided to add classrooms, build a new worship center and remodel the existing church space into a parish hall. The proposed construction to accommodate family growth is aimed at the year 2000 and has been studied for several months.
