Fair, tobacco festival
ABINGDON - The 47th annual Washington County Fair and Burley Tobacco Festival will get under way Monday and continue all week.
Comedian Jerry Clower will perform along with parade marshal John Bressler Sept. 14. The parade will be at 10 a.m. and the performances at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Other entertainers during the week will include Mike Snider on Wednesday, Jeff Carson Sept. 12 and Holly Dunn Sept. 13, all at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Other activities include a gospel sing at 7 p.m. Monday, horse-pulling contest at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Junior Miss and Miss Washington County beauty pageants at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday, a truck and tractor pull at 6 p.m. Sept. 13, and Cole Shows and rides on a midway at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Rescue fund drive
The Craig County-New Castle Volunteer Fire Department, in cooperation with Community Support Services, will be requesting pledges for its fund-raising drive.
Families who pledge will receive a 10-by-13 family portrait.
Proceeds will go toward a new pumper truck.

Nutrition and cancer
The Friends of the Bedford Public Library will give a program, ``Nutrition and Cancer Prevention,'' with nutritionist Brenda Mosby on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in the Bedford Room of the Bedford Central Library.
Mosby is an Extension Agent with the Cooperative Extension Service of Virginia Tech. Participants may bring their lunch.
Play auditions
Auditions for the Little Town Players' production of ``Because Their Hearts Were Pure'' will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. at the Elks National Home Theater.
The cast is for six men and nine women.
