Vinton Town Council breezed through one of its shortest meetings on record Tuesday night - 15 minutes.
Council had only one item on its agenda, which it quickly dispatched. That was an amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow outdoor displays by special use in areas zoned as residential/business.
This came about through a request from Steve Newcomb, a representative of Baer and Sons, a company that manufactures grave monuments. He wants to set up a permanent display of about 14 of the company's monuments on a lot on Hardy Road between Dillon Drive and McDonald Avenue. Newcomb said monuments on that lot would be for display only and not for sale.
The action council members took was to amend the zoning ordinance to allow outdoor displays in business/residential zones. Newcomb now must file another petition requesting a special-use permit for the display by his company.
There was no opposition to amending the zoning ordinance, and no opposition has surfaced to using the Hardy Road lot for a monument display.
