SALEM FIRES 3; POT CITED

Three temporary workers hired by the city of Salem to cut grass have been accused of smoking it - and were fired.

David Wayne Jones, 31; Jason Michael Skrivanie, 23; and a 17-year-old were charged Aug. 28 on one misdemeanor each of possession of marijuana, Salem Police Chief James Bryant said.

Bryant said his department investigated after hearing from city officials that some workers smoked the illegal drug on the job.

All three were fired after being called to a meeting at which City Manager Randy Smith and their supervisors presented the evidence against them.

He said this is the first time the city had enough evidence to fire employees in connection with illegal drug use, though a few employees have been fired for alcohol-related allegations.

"Maybe we should have been more specific when we told them we were hiring them to cut grass," Smith said.
