DEANE WILL REJOIN CAVS' WORKOUTS

Harold Deane's indefinite leave of absence from Virginia's men's basketball team ended Wednesday after exactly two months.

Deane, a senior guard, will take part in preseason conditioning drills and individual workouts with the Cavaliers' coaches.

``A decision regarding Harold's participation in the team's official practice sessions will be made prior to the beginning of preseason practice on Oct.15,'' UVa coach Jeff Jones said.

Deane's leave of absence followed his arrest April 12 on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest at a private party. He was found guilty of both counts Sept.5 and received two 30-day jail sentences, which were suspended. He has appealed.

In the announcement June 4 that Deane would be taking a leave of absence, Jones said that Virginia Dean of Students Robert Canevari would evaluate Deane's progress and take part in any decision on reinstatement.

``I've enjoyed the opportunity to get to know Harold better both as a student and a student-athlete,'' Canevari said in a statement released by the school. ``I believe he's a positive person and that he will have a productive senior year.''

Deane averaged 16.7 points last season, when he led the Cavaliers in scoring and was named second-team All-ACC. He was also first on the team in assists, steals, free-throw percentage and minutes played.
