Foundation sponsors basketball shootout

The Roanoke Foundation for Downtown is sponsoring a basketball shootout Saturday at Valley View Mall in conjunction with the Citizen Appreciation Day festivities.

Held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the shootout will feature a free-throw contest with four age divisions and male and female categories.

The purpose of the shootout is to raise funds for the mounted patrol unit of the Roanoke Police Department.

Chamber golf tees off soon

The fifth annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament sponsored by the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce will be held Sept. 13 at Hanging Rock Golf Club. A social sponsored by the Holiday Inn Tanglewood will follow the tournament.

Deadline for entry is Friday. The entry fee is $55 per player or $200 per team, with proceeds going to the Salem-Roanoke Chamber of Commerce. To enter, or for more information, call 387-0267.

Lewis-Gale offers free cancer exams

Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center will offer free breast and cervical cancer examinations in the oncology department of Lewis-Gale Clinic on Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The screening is open to women who are not current patients of a gynecologist, do not have a history of breast or gynecological cancer, and have not had a hysterectomy.

Hospice offers help for those in grief

Good Samaritan Hospice is offering a six-week grief recovery class from Wednesday to Oct. 16. The class will meet on Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Good Samaritan Hospice, 3825 Electric Road, Suite A. Pre-registration is required.

United Way sponsors leadership program

United Way of Roanoke Valley has announced a Leadership Enhancement Program designed to increase the volunteer leadership representation of ethnic groups on the boards and committees of United Way and community agencies.

Five sessions will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on successive Tuesday evenings, starting Sept. 17. Classes will be held at the Red Cross building on Church Avenue. There is a registration fee of $15.

Olde Salem Days kicks off Sept. 13

The Salem Jaycees have announced plans for the 16th annual Olde Salem Days, starting with a kickoff party Sept. 13.

The party, to be held at the Farmer's Market on Main Street, will run from 5 to 9 p.m. and will feature a variety of food vendors and door prizes.

The street festival Saturday, Sept. 14, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes an art show, antique car display and children's fair. A food court and entertainment at several locations will round out the activities.

Free parking and shuttle buses from the Salem stadium will be available.

County announces schedules of classes

The Roanoke County Public Schools Department of Adult and Continuing Education has announced the fall schedule of classes.

A wide variety of courses is being offered in such categories as arts and crafts, behavioral science, business, dance, finance, industrial safety, management and trade and industry.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Fees vary, with those over 60 receiving a 10 percent discount. For more information, call 857-5040 or 857-5042.

Learn about foreign adoptions

ABC Adoption Services Inc. is holding a series of free informational meetings on its international adoption program on the second Tuesday of every month. Costs and adoption procedures will be discussed.

In late October, a parent preparation/home study series will be offered to families who wish to adopt an foreign child.

Continuing-education courses offered

The Botetourt County School System is offering a wide variety of courses this fall through its adult continuing-education division.

Evening classes will begin next week at Lord Botetourt and James River high schools and Botetourt Technical Education Center. Classes will also be offered over the new Botetourt County Schools Interactive Television Network in cooperation with Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.

Bluefield College offers courses

Bluefield College, through its Adult and Continuing Education Division, will offer fall classes in the Roanoke area starting Sept. 23.

The program is designed to allow students with at least 54 college credits to complete their B.S. or B.A. degrees with a concentration in organizational management and development.

Qualified people may attend an informational meeting at the Salem Police Department on Monday at 6 p.m.

Recreation Department offers courses

The Roanoke County Recreation Department is offering a full schedule of senior and adult classes for the fall session.

Registration began Aug. 26 for classes ranging from art to dancing. Trips, tours and other activities are available as well.

The department also is offering a number of computer classes this fall, from basic to more advanced. Cost is $125 for four weeks.

Red Cross offers life-saving courses

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a number of life-saving courses this fall.

Among these are first aid, both adult and community CPR and baby-sitting. A complete schedule and more information may be obtained by calling 985-3550.

Seminar offered on living wills

A free seminar on power of attorney and living wills will be held Sept. 17, 10 a.m.-noon at the Brambleton Center, 3738 Brambleton Ave. After the information session, power of attorney and living will documents can be notarized.
