HIGHLANDER DEFENSE HOLDS OFF COVINGTON

Glenvar threw a defensive net over Joann Helton, the Pioneer District's 1995 player of the year, in a 53-47 non-district victory over Covington on Thursday night on the Highlanders' floor.

Helton was held to eight points, though foul trouble contributed to her problems.

The Highlanders (2-2) were led by Erika Hale, the Timesland Sizzlin' Sophomore of the Year in '95, with 20 points. Hale hit 12 of 16 free throws. Glenvar led by three points when Amanda Kennedy hit two 3-pointers, Amy Layman added one and Amanda Rydell got a big rebounds and hit two free throws.

Covington (3-1) was led by Melissa Page with 18 points.

In other games Thursday:

Salem 48, Brookville 40: Sarah Palmer scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Spartans past the Bees in a non-district victory in Lynchburg.

Palmer scored seven of Salem's nine points in the first quarter to help the Spartans (2-0) open a 9-2 lead. Elizabeth Croy added 10 points.

Lindsay Ferguson led Brookville (0-2) with 13 points.

The teams meet again Monday in Salem.

William Byrd 55, Jefferson Forest 51: The Terriers pulled out a close game with the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter in Forest.

Jefferson Forest led by nine after the first quarter, only to see Byrd come back to lead by two at the half. The Terriers then outscored the Cavaliers 15-8 in the third.

Byrd (3-1) was led by Brandy Allen, who scored 20 points. Stephanie Parnell had 18 in the non-district victory.

Jefferson Forest (2-2) was led by Melinda Minnick, with 14 points.

Northside 60, Liberty 34: Amber Kern scored a game-high 11 points to lead the Vikings (3-1) to the non-district victory over the Minettes (0-4) in Bedford.

Kern went 5-for-7 from the field and had six steals for Northside. Crystal Barrett contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.

Liberty was led by Selena Byers, who had nine points.

Lord Botetourt 77, James River 26: Sara Moore scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Cavaliers to a non-district rout of the Knights in Buchanan.

Sarah Hicks added 14 points for Lord Botetourt, which had a 46-7 halftime lead. The Cavaliers (5-0) are ranked first in the Timesland High Five.

Amy Sprinkle led James River (1-3) with six points.

Shawsville 75, Craig County 26: Megan Forster and Sarah Hagood scored 24 points each as the Shawnees picked up a non-district win. Forster added eight rebounds and Hagood grabbed nine.The Shawnees full-court press led to many Rockets turnovers and a 43-14 halftime lead on the way to a 49-point victory in a non-district game in Shawsville.

Jodi Harden led Craig County with nine points.

old off Narrows 56-53 on Thursday night in a non-district game on the Bobcats' floor.

Radford (4-1) hit seven of 10 in the last quarter. Narrows (2-2) missed 11 of 18 for the game.

The Bobcats held off the Green Wave in the final quarter as Charlee Taylor scored 10 of her game-high 20 points. Kim Kimbleton pulled down 12 rebounds for Radford.

Narrows was led by Bud Lucas with 17 points, Suzanne Webb with 15 and Tara Collins with 14.

s 8.5Staunton River 49, Fieldale-Collinsville 46: Crystal English hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to cap an 11-point comeback by the Golden Eagles (1-1) and produce a victory over the Cavaliers (0-3) in Moneta.

Staunton River (1-1) was led by Penny Forrest's 13 points, nine rebounds and six steals. English finished with 11 points and teammates Erin Wolfe and Stephanie Alexander added 10 each.

Fieldale-Collinsville (0-3) was led by Carrie Quinlan, with 12 points.

Harrisonburg 46, Rockbridge County 35: Jaime Kohlenstein scored 16 points and Trisha Ziegler added 13 as the Blue Streaks downed the Wildcats in a non-district game in Lexington.

Harrisonburg built a 14-4 lead and rolled to the victory. Kate Ides chipped in 10 rebounds and six blocks.

George Wythe 57, Fort Chiswell 42: The Maroons (2-2) broke open a close game in the fourth quarter en route to a victory over the Pioneers (1-2) in Wytheville.

Glenvar 53, Covington 47: The Highlanders threw a defensive net over Joann Helton, holding the Pioneer District's 1995 player of the year to eight points, in a non-district victory over the visiting Cougars.

Northside 60, Liberty 34: Amber Kern scored a game-high 11 points to lead the Vikings (3-1) to the non-district victory over the Minettes (0-4) in Bedford.

Kern went 5-for-7 from the field and had six steals for Northside. Crystal Barrett contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.

Liberty was led by Selena Byers, who had nine points.

Rocky Gap 50, Giles 41: Michelle Sarver had seven of her game-high 16 points in the final quarter as the Eagles (4-1) held off the Spartans (0-3) in a non-district game in Rocky Gap. The Eagles (4-1) also got 12 points from Melissa Leedy.

Giles (0-3) was led by Kristen White with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Floyd County 73, Blacksburg 46: The Buffaloes (5-0) used a strong first half to defeat the Indians (2-3) in a non-district game in Blacksburg.

Floyd County (5-0), ranked third in the Timesland High Five, had a balanced scoring attack that was led by Jill Quesenberry with 16 points and Sara Conner with 12 points.

Andrea Feret led Blacksburg (2-3) with 12 points.

Galax 48, Carroll County 35: The Maroon Tide (2-0) used a big third quarter to pull away for a non-district victory over the Cavaliers (2-2) in Hillsville.

Erin Kyle had 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead a balanced attack for Galax (2-0). Carroll County (2-2) was paced by Angie Farmer with a game-high 16 points and Chelsie Stoneman with 18 rebounds.

Alleghany 81, Bath County 53: The Mountaineers (2-0) used a pressing defense midway through the third quarter to break open a close non-district matchup in Low Moor.

Alleghany (2-0) led 37-32 when it turned up the pressure. Natasha Chapman led the Mountaineers with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists from the froward spot. Carrie Brown and Katie Craft added 13 points each. Kraft grabbed nine assists and Brown had 12.

Katie Hardbatger led Bath County with 17 points.

Shawsville 75, Craig County 26: The Shawnees full-court press led to many Rockets turnovers and a 43-14 halftime lead on the way to a victory in a non-district game in Shawsville.

Megan Forster and Sarah Hagood scored 24 points each for Shawsville. Forster added eight rebounds and Hagood grabbed nine.

Jodi Harden led Craig County with nine points.

Chilhowie 73, Bland 25: Emily Blevins scored 18 points as the Warriors (2-1) routed the Rockets (0-4) in a non-district game in Bland.

Pam Hopkins scored 11 points and Amanda Mountain added 10 for Chilhowie (2-1). The Rockets are 0-4.

Bassett 52, Laurel Park 40: In the Bassett Invitational, the Bengals (2-0) downed the Lancers (0-3) in the nightcap as Heather Miller had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Bassett is 2-0.

Laurel Park (0-3) was led by Isis Paddyfote with 20 points. Patrick County beat Magna Vista 55-44 in the first game.
