BIVENS, Doris Jean Hill, 66, of Bastian, died Thursday, September 5, 1996, in Wytheville from injuries received in an auto accident. She was born in Ohio January 9, 1930, the daughter of the late Ray and Viola Lawson Hill. She was a member of the Rocky Gap Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where she served as treasurer for 40 years, and was a retired employee from the Tultex Corporation in Bastian. She was preceded in death by a brother; and is survived by her husband, Harold C. Bivens of Bastian; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bill Hoosier of Bastian; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Starr Bivens of Wytheville, Larry and Debbie Bivens of Pulaski; a brother, Lowell Thomas Hill of Bluefield, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Mona Eichelberger, Ashley Bivens, Brittany Bivens, Jennifer Bivens, Jonathan Bivens, Christopher Bivens, Christine Hoosier, and Billy Hoosier; a special friend, Rebecca Harris. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, September 9, 1996, at the Bastian Church of God, Bastian, with Pastor Harry Sharley, Pastor Harold Toms, Pastor Bob Parrish, and Pastor Nelson Eichelberger officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rose Hill Cemetery in Bastian. FARRELL, Sherry G., 54, of Salem, died Thursday, September 5, 1996 at her home. She was a native of Brownsville, Penn. and had resided in Atlanta, Ga. for many years and had been a Salem resident since 1967. She was employed by Embassy Suites Hotel as Personnel Manager and had owned and operated the Laurel School of Dance for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irene K. and John J. Gerba, Sr. Survivors include a son, Thomas F. Farrell, Jr., Salem; daughter and son-in-law, Karen Farrell and Carl Bates of Richmond; grandson, Brian Thomas Bates, Richmond; sister, Maureen G. Dutka of Tampa, Fla.; brother, John J. Gerba, Jr., Marietta, Ga. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 9, 1996 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, with Father Gregory Kaudt officiating. Entombment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at John M. FIELDER, Dennis Carson, of 240 Briarcliff Lane, Danville, died Friday, September 6, 1996. Mr. Fielder was a former quality control manager for General Electric in Salem from 1964 to 1979. He is survived by his wife, Mary Harris Fielder of the home; a daughter, Dennice F. Morelli; a son, Mark Edward Fielder; his mother; two sisters; four grandchildren, and his maternal grandmother. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Danville. Interment will be at 4 p.m . Monday in Jerusalem United Methodist Church Cemetery near Galax. FISHER, Clara Manuel, 100, of Birdmont Health Care Center, and formerly of Austinville, died Thursday, September 5, 1996 in Birdmont. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late He nry Bourne Manuel and Martha Gallimore Manuel. She was a member of the Olive Branch United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Fisher; and a son, Raymond Fisher. She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Hoback of Bristol; one son, Carl Fisher of Richmond; daughter-in-law, Mildred Fisher of Austinville; one sister, Dora Clark of Wytheville; one brother, Ray Manuel of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 8, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. Interment will follow in the Olive Branch Cemetery. GRAY, Margaret Wallace, 80, of Anaheim, Calif., formerly of Roanoke, died Wednesday, September 4, 1996. She was preceded in death by her sister, Louise W. Eggleston and is survived by her daughter, Mary Lynn Woodburn, Mechanicsville; her son, David Gray, Huntington Beach, Calif. She had seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was born in Roanoke and attended Melrose Methodist Church. Services will be held September 12 in the Crystal Cathedral, Garden Grove, Calif.
HARRIS, Ella Mae Dahlem, 81, of 116 Robertson Street, Narrows, died Friday, September 6, 1996. She was born in Monroe County, Miss. on June 18, 1915, and was the daughter of the late Julius Morgan and Lou Logan Dahlem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Harris. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows. She also attended the Valley Presbyterian Church in Narrows with her daughter, Carolyn. Mrs. Harris was past president of the Pilot Club of Amory, Miss., and was a member of the Tripple L Club and Flower Lovers Garden Club of Amory, Miss. She was past president of the Wolf Creek Fellowship Club of Narrows. Mrs. Harris retired from food service at the Gilmore Memorial Hospital at Amory, Miss. She is survived by a son and his wife, Ray and Faye Harris of Seneca, S.C.; a daughter and her husband, Carolyn H. and Garland S. Spangler of Narrows; three brothers, Morris Dahlem, Pekin, Ill., Horril Dahlem, Hatley, Miss., Alvin Dahlem, Macon, Miss.; four sisters, Mattie Harris, Hamilton, Miss., Velma Buchanan, Grand Prarie, Texas, Vera Schmuck, Tampa, Fla., Lillian Tubb, Columbus, Miss.; four grandchildren, David Harris and his wife, Ann, of Oxford, Miss., Natalie, Jason and Clay Spangler, Narrows; two great-grandchildren, Kate and William Harris of Oxford, Miss. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, with the Rev. Dr. Don Clements officiating. The family will gather with their friends at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service. The remains will be sent to the E. E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory, Miss. for a service Tuesday. Burial wil l follow in Monroe County, Miss. Tuesday afternoon. HUMPHRIES, Dr. Thomas Jackson, 82, of Roanoke, died Friday, September 6, 1996, at home. He attended Hampden-Sydney College, and graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army in the North African and Italian campaigns. Dr. Humphries co-founded the Children's Clinic in Roanoke and practiced pediatrics in the valley for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Glenn Humphries; and is survived by two sons, Thomas Jackson Humphries, Jr., Hilton Head Island, S.C., John William Humphries, Salem; two daughters, Dorothy Lawrence, Roanoke, Catherine Highfill, Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Coleman, Andrew and Maria Lawrence, John and Austin Humphries, Owen and Jeff Highfill; a brother, Dr. Robert Tasker Humphries, Florida. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday from Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with Dr. F. Tupper Garden and Rev. Arthur E. Grant officiating. JANNEY, Harley G., (``Rocky""), 76, of Roanoke County, passed away Thursday, September 5, 1996 in a local hospital. He was employed by Fuel Oil & Equipment Corporation with over 43 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nellie P. Janney; children, Vera Weddle, Vinton, Marvin Janney, Eden, N.C., Leonard Janney and his wife, Pam, of Salem, Helen Jones and her husband, Gordon, of Roanoke; two brothers, S ilas Janney, Dayton, Ohio, Jasper Janney, Hillsville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. LILLY, Martha Pearl Flora, 89, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 5, 1996, in a Salem hospital. She was a graduate of Daleville Academy, Roanoke College and the University of Virginia. She had taught in the Roanoke County Public Schools for 22 years. She was active in many Christian works including the church choir and women's church youth groups. She was a member of the Melrose Christian Church. She is survived by her husband, Rev. J. Virgil Lilly; one son and daughter-in-law, Ashley and Sue Lilly, Bland County; two daughters and son-in-law, Elaine L. Allen, Lynchburg, Carolyn L. and Charles P. Newell Jr., Salem; one sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Edwin Greene, Roanoke; four grandchildren and spouses, Rondys and William Cook III, Lynchburg, Sherrill and Louis L. Wilson, Monroe, Carol and Bernard Butler, Winston-Salem, N.C., Martha and Jason DeBord, Christiansburg; six great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Sherwood Memorial Park with a memorial service held at noon at Lotz Salem Chapel. The Rev. Wayne W. McCauley and the Rev. Mrs. Ruth was born in Carroll County March 12, 1898 to the late Eli and Sarah Easter Stockner, and was a retired school teacher. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Alene Leftwich, Kennett Square, Pa.; several nieces and nephews; one great-nephew and wife, Dan and Sandra Stockner of Lester, Pa.; and two special friends, Martha Moore land J. P. Spears of Galax. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 7, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Fancy Gap Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Layne Pennington and Rev. SOWERS, Mary Ann, 54, of 2178 Airport Road, Lynchburg, died Friday, September 6,1996. Born in Fries, Va., she was the wife of Charles A. Sowers, and the daughter of the late Rev. Carl D. Funk and Lillie Anders Funk. Mrs. Sowers was a Campb ell County school bus driver. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Carl Kenly Sowers of Madison Heights, a daughter, Erin Nicole Sowers of Lynchburg, two stepdaughters, Cammie L. Sowers of Blacksburg, and Cindi Eller of Christiansburg, two brothers, Carl D. Funk Jr. of Roanoke, Eugene T. Funk of Hillsville, a sister-in-law, Lois B. Johnson of Huddleston, and one grandson, Cole Kenly Sowers. A graveside service will be held Monday Sept., 9, 1996 in Fort Hill Memorial Park. TURNER, G. Conway, 89, of Bassett, died Friday, September 6, 1996, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Mr. Turner was born March 4, 1907, in Patrick County, to the late Creed Will Turner and Annie Light Turner. He was self employed in the timber industry for over 20 years. He was a member of Reed Creek Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dovie Morrison Turner; one sister, and four brothers. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Elva) Wilshire of Collinsville, Mrs. Marshall (June) Franklin of Burlington, N.C., and Mrs. Ray (Violet) Frith of Bassett; three sisters Gwendolyn Lawson of Stuart, Agnes Thomas of Collinsville and Wanda Summers of Patrick Springs; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. YOWELL, Katherine Moomaw, 77, of Culpeper, died Friday, September 6, 1996, at the Health Care Unit of the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community after an extended illness. She was born in Roanoke February 11, 1919 to the late Benjamin Franklin Moomaw and Harriet Simmons Moomaw. Mrs. Yowell was active in many things during her more than 50 years in Culpeper. She was active in the Culpeper Baptist Church as teacher, choir member, and Woman's Missionary Leader. She was a member of the library board when the present building was built. Her desire to work with flowers was shown by her active membership in the Culpeper Garden Club. Mrs. Yowell attended Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood), where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. After two years, she transferred to Roanoke College, where she graduated in 1940. She is survived by her husband, John W. Yowell Jr.; three sons, Lewis Cowherd Yowell, William Moomaw Yowell, and John Chilton Yowell. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Parke C. Buchanan of Roanoke and Mrs. Norman G. Leek of Culpeper. Mrs. Yowell was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin Franklin Moomaw Jr.. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 1996, at 3 p.m. at Culpeper Baptist Church with Dr. Ted W. Fuson officiating.
