RUSH GAME POSTPONED UNTIL OCT.19

Tonight's National Minor Football League showdown between the Roanoke Rush (3-1) and the Knoxville Crusaders has been postponed to 7 p.m. on Oct. 19 at Victory Stadium because of Hurricane Fran.

As a result, Roanoke's next game is against the Triad Wallabies on Sept.14 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

In other sports news in the region:

*Roanoke's Keith Turner finished third in the road course event of the World In-line Speed Skating Championships in Venice, Italy. The competition continues through Sunday.

*The field hockey game between Roanoke College and Notre Dame (Md.) scheduled for today was canceled because of Hurricane Fran. The women's soccer game against North Carolina-Wesleyan, also scheduled for today, was postponed and no make-up date set.

*The first two games of the Coca-Cola Classic men's soccer tournament at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville were postponed until today. American will meet St.Louis at 11 a.m. with Virginia taking on Cal State Fullerton at 1:30 p.m.

*Kyle Petty will join Rick Mast on Tuesday night at an autograph session and benefit at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington.

Other drivers expected to be in attendance are Robert Pressley, Bobby Hamilton and Tim Fedewa, and there will be seven ``show'' cars on display.

Bruce Allen and the New South, a local Nashville recording group, will give a concert after the autograph session and there will be a silent auction of racing memorabilia.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the autograph session will be from 6-8. Tickets are available at the Bank of Rockbridge or at the door and cost $5 for adults and $3 for youths 12 and under.

Proceeds will go to the Rockbridge Free Health Center.

*New River Valley Speedway will finish its regular racing season Sunday with the Shepherd's Auto Supply 250. All divisions will compete for double points, which may affect the division championships in several classes.

Also on the schedule is the kids Bike Race Championships. All winners of the previous bike races are qualified for the title race.

Gates open at 10 a.m. and practice begins at noon. Qualifying for all divisions starts at 2:15 p.m., and racing starts at 4.

*Films of Virginia Tech's road football games will be shown Mondays at 7 p.m. at Boomer's on Williamson Road. The first game will be shown Monday featuring Tech at Akron.
