The many international residents drawn here by the beauty and opportunity of the New River Valley make a contribution to our area. One way in which local residents can share in the friendship of our many international visitors is by participating in the Friendship Program at the Cranwell International Center at Virginia Tech.
It doesn't take a lot of work. Local residents occasionally invite an international student or family to join them in day-to-day activities - a simple meal, a church picnic, family celebration, or a school play. International students are hungry to see how Americans really live and work.
Hosts and guests are matched on the basis of common interests. Residents participating in the program include people of all ages and family status and from many surrounding communities like Floyd and Newport. Friendship families do not provide housing or financial assistance to the students. The only thing local residents are asked to provide is friendship and understanding, both of which will be richly rewarded.
