Top-ranked Virginia had to settle for a 2-2 tie with No. 17 Cal-State Fullerton on the first day of the Coca-Cola Classic in Charlottesville.
Senior Bill Lanza began the scoring 12:52 into the game for the Cavaliers (1-0-1). Sheldon Thomas tied the score six minutes later for the Titans (2-0-1). Brian West scored 26 seconds later for Virginia and Fullerton finished the scoring on a corner kick that careened into the goal off the head of Cavalier midfielder Sean Feary.

* Virginia Tech's men's soccer team pulled off a 2-1 victory over Vanderbilt in Nashville.
Starislav Licul started the scoring for the Hokies (2-2). The Commodores (1-1) answered two minutes later on a goal by Tony Kuhn. Mark Ludwig netted the game-winner at the 65-minute mark.
* VMI recorded its second win of the year in men's soccer with a 2-0 shutout of Wofford in Lexington. Charles Jones and Mike Polhamus registered goals for the Keydets (2-1).
* Roanoke College defeated Hendrix 7-0 in the Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. Sam Starkweather, Adam Birch and Andy Newton had two goals each for the Maroons.
* The Roanoke College women's soccer team will face North Carolina Wesleyan today at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field. The game is a make-up from Saturday's rain out.
* Radford's Justin Mosby (Christiansburg) placed 10th overall among 105 runners at the Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee, N.C. The Highlanders placed 11th. Shane Reed (George Wythe) finished 67th.
Virginia Tech's women's team, featuring mostly freshmen on a split squad, finished seventh in a 12-team field. Jessica Scherrens placed 20th for the highest Hokie finish.
* Lisa Borte and Renee LaMontagne each scored as Radford (2-0) defeated St. Joseph's 2-1 in field hockey in the University of Connecticut Huskie Classic in Storrs, Conn.
