LORD BOTETOURT KNOCKS OFF GLENVAR 17-6

Tailback Wesley Cox had 22 carries for 223 yards and one touchdown, Torrey Phanelson contributed 22 tackles at middle linebacker and defensive end K.B. Rodgers added four sacks as Lord Boetetourt opened its season by holding Glenvar scoreless until the fourth quarter in a 17-6 non-district victory Saturday night in Daleville.

Sean Osborne had a 30-yard field goal and Cox and Phanelson each had 1-yard scoring runs for the Cavaliers (1-0).

Highlanders quarterback Seth Noonkester, a sophomore making his second start, went 9-of-22 for 113 yards. He had a 13-yard scoring toss to fullback John Perdue to avert the shutout. Noonkester also threw one interception.

Lord Botetourt held Glenvar (1-1) to 48 yards rushing, 47 of those in the second half.

In other games Saturday:

Staunton River 20, William Byrd 12: The Golden Eagles used a strong defensive performance to knock off the Terriers in a non-district matchup in Vinton.

The offensive star for Staunton River (1-1) was Tommy Ferguson, who rushed for 149 yards on 12 carries.

The Terriers are 0-1.

Giles 42, Floyd County 7: The Spartans scored in every quarter, capping that with a 21-point fourth period, to blast the Buffaloes in Pearisburg in a Three Rivers District opener.

Matt Whitehead, the Giles fullback, scored a career-high four touchdowns, and led the team's single-wing rushing attack with 76 yards on 15 carries. The Spartans had 318 overland yards.

Micah Steele, one of three Giles sophomores, came off the bench to add 61 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Shaun Vaught, subbing for gimpy-ankled Chris Ratcliffe at tailback, chipped in 65 rushing yards.

Giles (2-0) halted the Buffaloes in the second half, holding them to 1 yard and no first downs. Floyd County (1-1) had 103 yards of offense and four first downs for the game.

Floyd County tied the score 7-7 in the second quarter when quarterback Tony Erchall connected with wingback Matt Bishop on an 18-yard scoring play.

Graham 40, Blacksburg 20: The G-Men broke open a close game late by scoring the final two touchdowns to beat the Indians in a non-district game in Bluefield.

Graham (1-1) was led by Jarrod Tibbs, who ran for 162 yards on 22 carries, and Walter Kennard, who had two rushes for 84 yards and three interceptions.

Blacksburg (0-2) cut its deficit to a touchdown in the fourth quarter on the strength of two Graham fumbles. Tommy LaForce completed 19 of 46 passes with three touchdowns for the Indians.

Magna Vista 20, Franklin County 3: The Warriors dominated from the opening kickoff against the Eagles in a non-district game in Ridgeway.

Magna Vista (1-0) held Franklin County (1-1) without a first down and limited the Eagles to minus-4 yards rushing. Travis Preston ran for 105 yards on 8 carries for the Warriors.

Martinsville 30, Liberty 7: The Bulldogs (2-0) staged a 20-point fourth-quarter rally to put away the visiting Minutemen (1-1) in a matchup of 1995 Region III playoff teams at Dan Greene Stadium.

Martinsville got a 46-yard field goal, a 1-yard scoring run and three conversion kicks from Jess Wade, who doubles as the team's kicker and quarterback. Running back Manti Venable added scoring plunges of 1 and 2 yards. Marcus Hairston capped the fourth-quarter flurry with a 21-yard jaunt.

Liberty's Terry Staples accounted for the Minutemen's only points when he opened the scoring with a 5-yard run.

William Fleming 34, Petersburg 6: The Colonels (1-1) did most of their damage on the ground in a non-district victory over the Crimson Wave (0-2) in Petersburg.

William Fleming outgained Petersburg 235 yards - 171 on the ground - to 175. Demare Gill led the Colonels with 70 yards on 10 carries.

Powell Valley 40, Radford 13: Julius Jones had 98 yards rushing, 73 on a touchdown run, and Ryan Swinney ran for 94 yards and another touchdown as the Vikings ran up 312 yards on the ground to stampede the Bobcats in Radford.

Six players scored touchdowns for the two-time defending Group A Division 2 champions, who won for the 26th time in 27 outings. Powell Valley (1-1) was shut out 14-0 by Lee-Jonesville a week ago, snapping a 25-game winning streak.

Radford's Adam Artrip passed for 117 yards and two touchdowns for the Bobcats (1-1). Radford has lost its past three meetings with the Vikings.

Parry McCluer 22, Alleghany 7 Donald Schley set up one touchdown and passed for another as the Fighting Blues earned a non-district victory over the Mountaineers in Buena Vista.

Schley hit Robert Snider with a 26-yard pass to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Brockenbrough in the first quarter. Then Schley hit Jason Snider on a 5-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give Parry McCluer (1-1) a 15-7 lead at the half.

Brockenbrough scored the final touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Alleghany (0-1) had a touchdown by Brian Carroll on a 17-yard run in the second period.

Fort Chiswell 25, Galax 6: Nathan Houchins provided all the offense the Pioneers (2-0) needed to beat the Maroon Tide (0-2) in a Mountain Empire District game.

Houchins rushed for 174 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns. He scored on runs of 48, 50, 3 and 14 yards.

Bob Griffith scored for Galax on a 3-yard run.

Wilson Memorial 34, James River 8: Josh Cash scored two touchdowns and quarterback Jesse Roach passed for one as the Green Hornets crushed the Knights in Fishersville.

Cash rushed 12 times for 68 yards, opening the scoring with a 6-yard scamper in the first quarter and closing it for Wilson Memorial with a 3-yard run in the third.

Roach completed all 12 of his passes for 129 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown to Jeremiah Major as Wilson Memorial (1-1) built a 28-0 halftime lead.

Brian LeFlore scored on a 38-yard run and caught the two-point conversion pass with barely two minutes remaining in the game to account for the only points for James River (0-2).

Bath County 27, Pocahontas 7: The Chargers' rushing attack was too much for the Indians to overcome in the non-district game in Hot Springs.

Bath County (2-0) amassed 340 yards on the ground and 365 total yards. Anthony Pusey rushed 17 times for 172 yards and scored three touchdowns, and teammate Brandon Woodard rushed 16 times for 119 yards and one touchdown on offense and two interceptions on defense.

Pocahontas (1-1) was held to 169 yards of total offense.

Narrows 30, Garden 14: Senior tailback David Turner rushed for two touchdowns and 187 yards to lead a powerful ground attack as the Green Wave (1-1) ran over the Green Dragons (0-2) in a non-district game in Narrows.

Quarterback Jeffrey Bowers added 84 yards and Dalton Smith had 74 for Narrows, which chewed up 365 yards rushing. Smith and Heath Fleeman scored the other touchdowns, both on the ground, for the Green Wave.

Garden's touchdowns came on a 9-yard run by John Horn in the second quarter and a 4-yard burst by Jason Christian in the final period. see microfilm for box score
