ADAMS, Betty V., 71, of Stuart, Fla., and Roanoke, Va., died Sunday, September 8, 1996. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

ADAMS, Lupe Kegley, 59, of Hollins, died Saturday, September 7, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Harold Ray Adams. Born on January 31, 1937, in Pittsylv ania County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Pearl McDaniel Kegley. She was an employee of Lazarus in Roanoke. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Adams and her fiance, Michael Fechisin, of Hollins and Annette Cash and her husband, Donald Cash Sr., of Evington; two brothers, Terry Kegley of Hurt and Monte Kegley of Evington; two sisters, Patsy East and Peggy Tharp of Altavista, and one grandson, Donald Cash Jr. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, 1996, at Mt. Herman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Becky Cloud. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Finch and Finch Funeral Home in Altavista from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, and other times at the residence of a daughter, Annette Cash, (Route 692) Masons Mill Road, Evington.

ALBERT, Violet A., 89, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, September 8, 1996. Arrangements by Lotz Roanoke Chapel.

AUVIL, Earl Wiseman, 80, of Pembroke, died Saturday evening, September 7, 1996 at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Summersville, W. Va. on April 5, 1916, he was a son of the late Rev. S. Harry and Mary Edna Crawford Auvil. He was the husband of the late Helen Lucas Auvil and the brother of the late Rev. Keith Auvil, Otis Auvil, Rev. Scley Auvil and Mildred Bloss. Earl was active in his community, earning his living at the Hoechst-Celanese Plant in Narrows, served as Deacon and Elder in his church, Pembroke Christian Church, served as a member of the Pembroke Town Council, was a member of Pembroke Ruritan Club, a member of Pembroke American Legion Post 2000 (WWII veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps), Castle Rock Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 334, where he was a member for over fifty years, and served on the Board of Directors for the Celco Federal Credit Union. Surviving are his sons, Harry S. Auvil of Pembroke and David V. Auvil and his wife, Sue, of Melbourne, Florida; three grandchildren, Robert Auvil of Christiansburg, Erica Auvil and Jennifer Auvil, both of Melbourne, Florida; a great-grandchild, Amber Auvil of Blacksburg; two sisters, Marguirite McCoy of Charlotte, N.C. and Ruth Waldorf of Satsuma, Florida; two half sisters, Annette Gentry of Roanoke and Wanda Robbins of Salem; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Walters of Pembroke and Mable Auvil of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 11, 1996, at 11 a.m. in the Kendall funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. Terry Willis officiating. The family will receive friends at the f uneral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service will be conducted at eight o'clock by Castle Rock Lodge. Burial will be in Burchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg following the funeral, with graveside military rites performed by the VFW and American Legion. BARNHART, Delmar E., 83, of Clearwater, Fla., died Thursday, September 5, 1996, at Drew Village Nursing Home. A native of Wirtz, Va., he was employed by the State of Florida as a carpenter and bridge tender from 1950 to 1978. He was a member of First Church of the Brethren in Sarasota, Fla. Years ago, Mr. Barnhart lived in Roanoke, Va. He is survived by his wife, Virginia L. Barnhart of Clearwater; two grandchildren, Stephen E. Annis and Teresa R. Annis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Sylvia Abbott and Gladys Nunley of Sarasota, Fla., and a brother, Clarence Barnhart of Roanoke Va. BOWSER, Richard Leroy, 78, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday morning, September 8, 1996 in a local nursing home. He was a resident of Franklin Manor. Surviving are his wife, Effie Jamison Bowser, Boones Mill; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Wolf Bowser, Lewisburg, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary V. and Mark W. Bowman, Boones Mill; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Hazel Comer Fultz, Dayto n, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted from Wolf Creek Old German Baptist Church, 10 a.m. Wednesday, with the Home Brethren officiating. Interment will follow in Trissle Cemetery, New Lebanon, Ohio. BRIGGS, John William, 92, of Salem, died Saturday, September 7, 1996, in a local hospital. He was involved in business for many years, and was the owner and operator Briggs, Church and Church School Supply in Salem. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir for the past 29 years. He was a member of Masonic lodge in New York, A.F.&A.M. He was a 75-year Boy Scout veteran, received the Silver Beaver Award and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith C. Briggs. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce Robert S. and JoAnn Briggs of Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Meleani S. and Michael W. Huffman of Troutville, and Sharon S. and Mark Mann of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Bruce Robert S. Briggs II, Gretchen Ann Bower, Virginia Griffith Smith, Laura M. Monsour, Beth Ann Huffman and David M. Huffman; great-grandchildren, Bruce Robert S. Briggs III and John Scott Bower; a brother, Robert C. Briggs Sr., and a nephew, Robert C. Briggs Jr. of Arizona. CARROLL, Garland, (``Tom""), 56, of Goodview, passed away Saturday, September 7, 1996, at his home. He is survived by his son, Greg Carroll; his former wife, Ann Carroll, and several special friends. CHEEK, Hettie Sims, 93, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, September 7, 1996, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born April 24, 1903, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late William Henry Sims and Pocahontas Bates Sims. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Rucker Cheek, and two grandsons, Stuart Lee Cheek and Gregory Scott Cheek. She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and member of United Methodist Women and the Choir. She also was a member of the Home Demonstration Club. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Regina C. and Buford Gross of Bedford, and Mildred C. and Nelson Adkins of Blue Ridge; four sons and daughters-in-law, John Henry and Paige Cheek of Bedford, Bobby R. and Shirley Cheek of Goode, Lyle C. Cheek of Lynchburg and Cicero (``C. T."") Cheek and special friend, Martha Ransone, of Richmond; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. DICKERSON, Alice F., 93, of Avante Nursing Home, Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Adkins. Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Mamie Goins, Viola Brown and Marie Atkins; a brother, William Atkins, Jr., and one niece, Miss Alice M. Atkins. Her survivors include many friends, Mrs. Mary Walters and Mrs. Diana Woods, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Forbes, Mrs. Stella Barlow, Mrs. Daisy Wiggins, Mrs. Blanche Gray, Mrs. Stacie Turner, Mrs. Susan Carroll and Mrs. Betty Bingham. EPPERSON, R. Fletcher, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, September 7, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Medical Center. He was born in Abingdon, the son of Dr. Ernest Egbert Epperson and Bertha Rowe Epperson. Mr. Epperson attended Emory and Henry College and graduated from National Business College. He was a partner in Wiley N. Jackson Company for 40 years. He was on the Board of Trustees of Woodlawn United Methodist Church, and was a founding member 50 years ago. Mr. Epperson was an avid gardener, and was dearly loved by his family and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kathleen Epperly Epperson; four daughters, Carolyn Marie Nolan of Madera, Calif., Anna Catherine Epperson of Roanoke, Martha Fletcher Kling of Hamilton and Lois Jean Waldvogel of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Laurel and Luke Nolan, and Ashley, Erin and Ann Michael Waldvogel; two brothers, Egbert P. Epperson of Texas and Aubrey G. Epperson of North Carolina; one sister, Madge Via of Abingdon, and several nieces and nephews. HAYES, Graham Evans, 74, of Nelson, died Saturday, September 7, 1996, after an extended period of failing health. He was a devout Christian, devoted husband, loving father and retired contractor. Born on February 3, 1922, Graham's personal life exemplified his strong Christian beliefs and dedication to his church, Averett Baptist in Buffalo Junction. He served the church most of his adult life as clerk, Sunday school teacher, deacon and in various other positions. He also was an active member of the Gideons and wrote the weekly Sunday school lesson for the Clarksville Times and its successor, the News-Progress. ``Gabby,"" as he was known to many, was a bridge construction superintendent with W. W. Warsing Inc. for over 30 years before retiring and forming his own company. His career carried him throughout Virginia. His proudest professional achievement was the bridge spanning the James River at Scottsville. Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, the former Helen Louise Carden of South Boston; a daughter, Deborah Lynn Hayes Pulliam and her husband, Ronnie; a son, Timothy Graham Hayes and his wife, Judy; two granddaughters, Robin McAlexander and her husband, Scot, and Kelly Pulliam; a grandson, Kirk Hayes; a stepgranddaughter, Jodi Valeri; a great-granddaughter, Ellen McAlexander, and three sisters, Catherine Talbott, Frances Smith and Wilma (``Polly"") Truman. He was predeceased by one son, David Brian Hayes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, 1996, at Wat kins Cooper Lyon Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. HENSLEY, Emma Goff, 84, of Natural Bridge Station, died Saturday, September 7, 1996, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Hensley was born May 15, 1912, in Nelson County, a daughter of th e late Ozie E. Goff and Mable Wilson Goff. She was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church, and retired from Burlington Industries after 37 years. Mrs. Hensley was the widow of Jessie Hensley. Surviving are one brother, Clave A. Goff of Big Island; four sisters, Lizzie Markham and Fleta Wilson of Big Island, Frances Wood of Natural Bridge Station and Estelle Markham of Bedford, and a number of nieces and nephews. The daughter of the late Kline and Arie Gallimore, she was also preceded in death by one son, Thomas Edward Howell and her husband, of almost fifty years, Ralph Edward Howell. JOHNSON, Sedrick, 82, of Vinton, passed away Saturday, September 7, 1996. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Vinton, where he served on the Deacon Board. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Johnson, and a son, Leroy Johnson. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Marion Elizabeth Johnson, Stanton Island, N.Y., Linda L. Davis, Vinton, Deddy D. MARTIN, Lawrence D., (``L. D.""), 89, of Pulaski, passed away Saturday, September 7, 1996, in Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Carroll County on February 10, 1907, a son of the late William Cloyd Martin and Sarah Ellen Bowman Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Francis L. Spencer Martin, and a daughter, Betty Lovelane Martin Caviness. Mr. Martin is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil Dewey Martin of Pulaski, Clyde and Barbara Martin of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Glenn and Martha Martin of Pulaski; four daughters and sons-in-law, Josie and James Cooper of Suffolk, Myrtes Imogene Martin French Worrell of Abingdon, Dorothy Irene Margin McFall of Mr. Airy, N.C., and Linda and Bruce Akers of Draper; a brother, John Martin of Troy; 25 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. MOORE, Neil H., 57, of Roanoke, died Saturday, September 7, 1996. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his first wife, Sally P. Moore. He is survived by his wife, Ellen L. Moore; a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly M. and Ryland Hubbard Jr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James R. and April M. Moore, and Neil D. and Ramona M. MULLINS, Mary Prillaman, 83, of 324 Hilltop Drive, Rocky Mount, and formerly of Henry, died Sunday, September 8, 1996, at the home of her daughter. She was born April 27, 1913, to the late Rob and Sallie Bet Prillaman, and was the last surviving member of their family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur L. Mullins Sr., and an infant daughter, Betty Lois Mullins. Surviving are one daughter, Peggy M. Via of Rocky Mount, and one son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur L. (``Jimmy"") and Betty R. Mullins of Riner, and their family, Mark, Pat and Megan Mullins of Blacksburg, Michael and Mary Mullins and Kelly Keffer of Staffordsville, and Matthew Mullins of Riner. PITMAN, Richard Symes, 46, of Troutville, died Saturday, September 7, 1996 at his home. He served as Senior Vice -President of J. M. Turner and Co., Inc. Richard was President of the Roanoke Valley Youth Hockey Association and was a 1972 graduate of V.M.I. Survivors include his wife, Marian J. Pitman; one son, Daniel Christopher Pitman; one daughter, Sarah Catherine Pitman; his mother, Kathleen Pitman; one brother, Frank Pitman; and one sister, Barbara Anne Romanchuk. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 10,1996, at the Roanoke First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Smith and the Rev. Phil West officiating. SAUL, Edith Kathleen, 80, of Radford, died Saturday, September 7, 1996, in a Shawsville nursing home. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Mrs. M. W. (Grace) Thomas. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Surviving are 15 nieces, 8 nephews and the Thomas family. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

SMEDLEY, John William Russell, SFC (Ret.), 79, of Fairfield, died Saturday, September 7, 1996, in the VA Hospital in Salem. He was born July 14, 1917, in Lexington, a son of the late Russell Smedley and Dorothy Brown Smedley. Mr. Smedley served in the U. S. Army as Sergeant First Class, retiring after 22 years and having served in World War II. He also served in Alaska, Europe, Japan, Korea and Viet Nam. He was a member of Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Swope Smedley; two sons, Larry Russell Smedley, Sr. and Jerry William Smedley of Lexington; one daughter, Karen Smedley Hightower of Springfield; two grandsons, Larry R. Smedley Jr. of Fairfield and Michael Hightower of Springfield; four granddaughters, Cindy Smedley Thorne and Sandra Smedley of Raphine, Cathy Smedley of Buena Vista and Patricia Smedley Smith of Stuarts Draft; two great-grandsons, Markus Allen Comb and Nathan Russell Smedley of Fairfield, and one great-granddaughter, Denise Smith of Stuarts Draft. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 1996, at Williams Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Phillip Mace officiating. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in the Timber Ridge ARP Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity. SPICHEK, Mildred, (``Milka""), 94, of Roanoke, died Sunday, September 8, 1996, at her home. She was born September 7, 1902, in Croatia, and was preceded in death by her husband, John Spichek Sr. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church. Survivors include t hree daughters, Zora (``Polly"") Wadosky, Donnie M. Kaszuba and Ruby Belcher; six sons, John Spichek Jr., Nicholas Spichek, Michael J. Spichek, James Spichek, William Spichek and Joseph E. Spichek; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 1996, at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Rev. Randy Rule officiating.
