A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HOME-SCHOOLED KID

Think home-schooled kids get to sit home all day and watch TV? Guess again! Here's a typical day in the life of fourth-grade home-schooler Stephanie Rife:

7 a.m.: Stephanie wakes up and gets dressed. She works on her daily chores such as making her bed, helping with breakfast and feeding her three cats. Then she eats breakfast.

8:15 a.m.: When she finishes breakfast, Stephanie brushes her teeth. Then, she takes some time to practice playing her trumpet.

8:45 a.m.: It's time to get some exercise before school starts. Stephanie usually plays soccer or basketball with her older sisters who are also home schooled.

9 a.m.: School starts for Stephanie. She usually does her math work first, because it's the hardest.

10 a.m.: After she finishes her math problems, it's time for a half-hour of world history.

10:30 a.m.: Most days, Stephanie studies Earth Science, but on Fridays she helps her Mom bake.

11 a.m.: After science or baking, she spends an hour working on language arts such as grammar, spelling and vocabulary.

Noon:When Stephanie finishes her morning work, it's time for lunch.

1 p.m.: After lunch is free time. She's allowed to go outside and play. If it's raining, Stephanie stays inside and does crafts or plays with the cats.

2 p.m.: She uses this time to read a book or catch up on schoolwork. Or, she'll work on bigger school projects such as book reports or science projects.

3 p.m.: Stephanie goes to a 4-H meeting with other home-schoolers. It's one of the ways she meets new friends.

4 p.m.: It's almost supper time, so Stephanie helps her mother prepare and cook the meal. There're other chores to be done, too.

5 p.m.: Most days Stephanie and her family eat supper together, but on Mondays she goes to gymnastics class.

6 p.m.: After dinner, Stephanie likes to walk her dog, Buttons.

7 p.m.: Every week, Stephanie's mom takes the three sisters to the public library so they can pick out books to read at school during the week.

8:30 p.m.: Stephanie gets ready for bed.

9 p.m.: Stephanie goes to bed. After a busy day, Stephanie's glad to get some rest. And it starts all over again in the morning!
