WELCOME BACK TO NEWSFUN

The school bell has rung, and that signals another year of NewsFun, a section published for kids - from first to seventh grade - every Monday in The Roanoke Times.

This year, NewsFun welcomes a new writer. His name is John Griessmayer and he is an editorial assistant who has worked at The Roanoke Times for a year. John, who lived in Lynchburg before moving to Roanoke about five years ago, is a graduate of Roanoke College. John says he has always wanted to be a writer; in fact, his favorite subjects in school were English and creative writing. Besides writing, he enjoys working out at the gym.

John will be happy to hear from NewsFun readers. If you have a story idea or if something interesting has happened to you or someone you know, call John at 981-3341.

In addition to new stories about kids around the Roanoke and New River valleys, NewsFun will carry some of your old favorite features. Returning are: Teacher of the Week, where kids nominate their teachers by sending us their names and a brief description of their teacher; Kidreview, featuring reviews of books, movies and video games submitted by readers; MiniForum, in which kids write letters to be published in response to a question; and Dear Kidsday, an advice column for kids. Around Town and So?! will continue to let you know what's happening in our area of interest to kids.

Look for a new item in NewsFun: Q&A, which begins next week, will feature answers to unusual questions. If you have one, or if you want to nominate a teacher for Teacher of the Week, submit a review for Kidreview, send us a drawing you're proud of on plain white paper, or share with us some of your recent accomplishments or something that's happening in your school or classroom, write to NewsFun, The Roanoke Times, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke, Va. 24010-2491.

NewsFun is your newspaper. We want you to look forward to it each week. Have a great school year.
