No one was home early Monday morning when a fire ignited in the attic of a frame home on Brake Road and gutted the kitchen.
M.L. "Pug" Wells, chief of the Elliston Volunteer Fire Department, said he was not certain what caused the fire that was discovered about 2:40 a.m.
"We arrived within six minutes of the call and smoke and flames were coming through the roof," Wells said.
Deputy D.W. Bolejack of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office discovered the fire and called for help. The deputy entered the home to alert anyone inside and was later treated and released for smoke inhalation, Wells said.
The home is listed as belonging to Jerry Avila, Wells said. By 10 a.m., authorities had not been able to contact Avila.
Wells said three firefighters suffered minor heat exhaustion while fighting the fire, but none needed medical attention. Firefighters and rescue squad members from Christiansburg, Riner and Shawsville aided Elliston on the call.
