DUKE PACES GOLF FIELD AT KIAWAH

Duke fired a 7-under-par 569 over 36 holes to take the lead after one day of the Kiawah Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held at the par-72, 6,678-yard Osprey Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Virginia Tech, which posted a 6-under 282 to lead after 18 holes, finished with a 578 total and dropped to fifth in the 18-team event.

Individually, Donny Lee of Virginia Commonwealth leads after shooting 68-70 for 138. Virginia Tech golfer David Havens shot 69-73 for 142 and is tied for 10th.

Other Tech players are Curtis Deal (70-74-144), Brad Hyler (71-73-144), Mike Veres (72-76-148) and Robby Rasmussen (74-76-150). The final round will be played today.

In other sports news in the region:

* Rachel Partridge, Allison Dlugos, Lori Erickson, Meredith Arnot and Kathrine Novak scored one goal apiece as Roanoke College (2-1) ripped host Ferrum College 5-1 in women's soccer.

Hilary Wager tallied the lone goal for the Panthers (0-1), who were outshot 21-4.

* In Salem, Jen Schwarzenbek had two goals and two assists and Sarah Gioffre added two goals as the Lynchburg College field hockey team routed Roanoke College 7-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference season opener for both teams.

Freshman Beth Hammond scored the only goal for the Maroons.

* Roanoke College golfer Will Leety placed fourth individually in the Bridgewater/ODAC round-robin played at the Ingleside Golf Course in Staunton. Leety fired a 2-over-par 74, finishing two strokes behind tournament champion Ryan Mayo (Randolph-Macon). The Maroons placed fourth in the team competition with a round of 319. Guilford captured top honors with a 299.

* The women's division of the Virginia State Golf Association will hold its State Team Matches at Army Navy Country Club in Arlington Sept.17-19.
