Yokohama Tire plant returns to operation

The Yokohama Tire Corp. plant in Salem resumed operations Monday after a summer marked by the layoffs of 44 workers and three temporary shutdowns since July.

The return of production workers ended a 11/2-week plant closing. To curtail production, the company extended its regularly scheduled, unpaid Labor Day leave from three days to eight.

A major customer plans to reduce its purchases starting in October, which could lead to further job cuts.

The plant employs 1,000 people and operates seven days a week.
