CATHOLIC LOSES DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE

Shawsville overcame five fumbles and an interception with strong defensive play to edge Roanoke Catholic 14-12 on Monday night in a non-district game in Shawsville.

Catholic (2-1) opened the scoring in the second quarter when Aki Al-Zubaidi tossed a 46-yard pass to P.J. Moyer.

The Shawnees (1-0) thwarted the Celtics' next scoring bid when their defense held Roanoke Catholic for four plays on the half-yard line.

Anthony Creasy put Shawsville on the board with a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but Moyer broke loose for a 62-yard run to give Catholic a 12-6 lead.

Shawnees quarterback Chris Graham finished the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run and a two-point pass to Paul Sink.

The Celtics were driving with about two minutes to go, but Sink picked off a pass to seal the victory.

Creasy had 16 carries for 124 yards to lead Shawsville, and Graham completed 11 of 19 passes for 161 yards with one interception.

Moyer finished with 20 carries for 138 yards for Catholic.

In other games Monday night:

Jefferson Forest 40, Cave Spring 18: The Cavaliers got long runs and passes featuring Chris Ridgeway and Nick Mistretta as they overpowered the Knights in a non-district game in Forest.

Ridgeway threw an 85-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception for a touchdown. Mistretta had scoring runs of 64 and 29 yards.

Cave Spring (0-2) tied the score at 6 in the second quarter when Floyd Gregory returned a blocked punt 38 yards for a touchdown.

Jefferson Forest (1-1) scored the next four touchdowns.

Auburn 48, Craig County 20: William Shelton scored three touchdowns to help the Eagles (1-1) cruise to a non-district victory over the Rockets (0-2) in Riner.

Shelton led Auburn's rushing attack with 134 yards on 18 carries. The Eagles had 409 yards rushing. Jason Phipps completed three of six passes for 59 yards and threw one touchdown.

Jason Pauley rushed for 76 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Rockets.

Pulaski County 7, Amherst County 0: The Cougars won their second consecutive non-district game, knocking off the defending Group AA Division 4 champions in Amherst.

The only score came in the first quarter, when Craig Hodge dived over from the 1-yard line on Pulaski County's second possession.

Cedric Ellis of Amherst County fumbled a punt by Bryan Myers punt at his own 11-yard line. Dorian Hendricks recovered for the Cougars. Three plays later, Hodge got the touchdown and Myers kicked the point after.

Pulaski County marched to the Lancers' 25 early in the third quarter, but was stopped by penalties. Amherst County (1-1) reached the Cougars' 25 late in the second quarter, but Pulaski County's defense - led by Bryan Dalton and Jamie Rupe - sacked Dante Christian on third down.

Amherst County crossed the 50 once in the second half, but Shay McMillan, Ryan Brockmeyer, Dalton and Rupe sacked Christian on consecutive downs to end that threat.

Hodge carried 22 times for 71 yards in the defensive struggle.

R.E. Lee-Staunton 22, Rockbridge County 19: Rob Richmond scored with 1:32 left as the Leemen came from behind to beat the Wildcats in a non-district game in Staunton.

Lee's rally wiped out a strong effort by Rockbridge County's Clay Hobson, who rushed for 114 yards on 10 carries and scored the Wildcats' first touchdown.

After Richmond scored on a 26-yard run, Rockbridge County reached midfield, where an interception halted the drive.

Grayson County 27, Bland County 6: The Blue Devils almost tripled the Bears in total offense in a Mountain Empire District victory in Independence.

Grayson County (1-0, 1-0) amassed 348 total yards to Bland County's 118. The Blue Devils were led by Chad Carrico, who rushed for 143 yards on 14 carries and scored one touchdown.

Keith Bourne ran for 70 yards on 13 carries for Bland County (1-1, 1-1). The lone Bears touchdown was scored with nine seconds to go, and the drive accounted for roughly half of their total offense.
