MAN CONVICTED OF THREATENING RAPE HE CALLED GIRLS FROM PAY PHONE

A Roanoke man - convicted earlier in Roanoke County of 10 counts of threatening over the phone to abduct or rape girls - pleaded guilty Tuesday in Botetourt County to similar charges.

Michael A. Obremski, 42, was convicted of two charges of threatening to abduct with intent to defile two 11-year-old girls in 1994, Botetourt Commonwealth's Attorney Joel Branscom said.

In one incident, Obremski called an 11-year-old girl and her sister, Branscom said after the trial. In the other incident, Obremski called a girl, but got her mother instead, who pretended to be the girl until she heard a man make lewd remarks about a newspaper picture of the girl in her bathing suit.

According to investigators, Obremski would choose his victims from the Neighbors section of The Roanoke Times, frequently from the swim team results.

Obremski was arrested in May after a three-year investigation led police to a pay phone near the Plaza Court Motel on Williamson Road, where Obremski lived.

Obremski pleaded no contest a month ago to 10 counts of the same charge in Roanoke County. He is due in court in Roanoke on Oct. 24 on nine more charges.
