JAMES RIVER SHOCKS SHAWSVILLE

James River rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime and came away with a 56-51 upset of Shawsville on Tuesday night in a non-district game on the Shawnees' floor.

Nakia Burrell scored 22 points for the Knights, who outscored Shawsville 18-11 in the fourth period and 7-2 in the extra period.

Amy Sprinkle scored 13 for James River (2-3). Megan Forster had 18 and Beth Burdette 13 for for the Shawnees (4-1).

In other games Tuesday:

Patrick County 60, Martinsville 57, OT: The Cougars had a terrible second quarter, but prevailed in overtime in a game between Piedmont District foes that did not count in the league standings.

Patrick County (5-1) outscored Martinsville 6-3 in the extra period, with all the points coming from the free-throw line. Geneva Hylton and Holly Weber led the Cougars with 13 points, Alison Brammer added 11 and Summer East scored 10. Tiffany Watkins led the Bulldogs (0-3) with 14.

Christiansburg 48, Radford 42: The Blue Demons (3-1) gained control of a tight game in the fourth period and made six of 10 free throws in the final minutes to beat the Bobcats (4-3) in a non-district game in Christiansburg.

Amber Reed scored 14 points for Christiansburg, which beat Radford 48-38 on Monday. Charlee Taylor led the Bobcats with 20 points this time and Kim Kimbleton chipped in 14.

Alleghany 64, Covington 51: The Mountaineers controlled the offensive boards in a game in Covington.

The Cougars, depleted by illness, could not stop Alleghany's Nikki Brown, either. Brown had 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Mountaineers who joined Brown in double figures were: Carrie Brown, 13; Katie Craft, 12; and Natasha Chapman, 10.

Joanne Helton led Covington (3-2) with 21 and Charity Tyree had 12. Alleghany moved to 3-0.

Abingdon 55, George Wythe 52: The Falcons held the Maroons to one field goal in the fourth quarter to win a non-district game in Wytheville.

Abingdon trailed by 10 points in the first half and by seven entering the fourth before outscoring George Wythe 17-7. Angie McConnell led Abingdon with 17 points.

Megan Johnston scored 16 for George Wythe (2-3), Tonya Cregger had 10.

Parry McCluer 52, Rockbridge County 39: Lindsey Coleman scored 23 points to lead the Fighting Blues past the Wildcats in a non-district game in Lexington.

Nikki Barger had 15 points for Parry McCluer.

Fort Chiswell 53, Auburn 48: Amber Gunter had 18 points and nine rebounds to pace the Pioneers to a non-district victory over the Eagles in Fort Chiswell.

Amy Coleman had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers (3-2). Susan Wirt scored 13 and Laura Underwood had 12 for Auburn.

Lord Botetourt 72, Glenvar 52: The Cavaliers (6-0) held off a determined Highlanders squad in a rematch of their game a week ago.

Lord Botetourt, which downed Glenvar 74-38 in the first matchup, was led by Sarah Hicks' 29 points. The Highlanders (2-3) cut their deficit to 13 in the third quarter, but Hicks hit a 3-pointer to put them away.

Glenvar got 17 from Erika Hale and 12 from Bonnie Willett.

Bath County 50, Buffalo Gap 40: Katie Hardbarger and Kerri Hepler combined to lead the Chargers to their second victory of the season, a non-district triumph over the Bison in Hot Springs.

Hardbarger scored 24 points (10 in the third) and Hepler had eight as Bath County (2-3) outrebounded its taller opponent.

Corey Surface had 12 points for Buffalo Gap (0-5).

Chatham 50, Magna Vista 49: The Cavaliers rallied from a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Warriors in a non-district game in Chatham.

Claudia White led the Cavaliers with 18 points. Sandi Reid scored 17 for Magna Vista.

Marion 60, Carroll County 42: Leigh Jones scored 20 of her game-high 27 points in the first half as the Hurricanes won a non-district game in Hillsville.

Marion (4-1) built a 30-20 halftime lead and never was threatened again.

Carroll County (2-3) got 19 points from Angie Leonard.

Bassett 71, Dan River 29: The Bengals (4-0) bolted to an early lead and never were threatened in notching a non-district victory over the Wildcats (0-1) in Ringgold.

Narrows 58, Giles 42: The Green Wave built a 12-point halftime lead and never looked back en route to a non-district victory over the Spartans in Pearisburg.

Suzanne Webb led Narrows with 17 points, Tara Collins scored 15 and Bud Lucas added 11.

Erin Williams scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Kristen White added 10 points and 14 rebounds for Giles.

William Byrd 59, Staunton River 31: The Terriers pounded the ball in to Brandy Allen and Stephanie Parnell as they downed the Golden Eagles in Moneta.

Allen and Parnell each had 18 points to lead William Byrd. Crystal English scored 10 to lead Staunton River (1-2).

Salem 56, R.E. Lee-Staunton 33: Sarah Palmer scored 21 points and Erin Collins added 12 as the Spartans won a non-district game in Salem to remain unbeaten through five games.

Blacksburg 63, Graham 37: The Indians got stronger as the game went on and turned back the G-Girls in Bluefield.

Graham (1-5) did not reach double figures in any of the last three quarters. Blacksburg (3-3) was led by Andrea Feret's 15 points and Karly Geller's 12.

Rural Retreat 61, Patrick Henry-Glade Spring 44: The Indians broke open the game in the third quarter by cutting down on their turnovers and getting the Rebels into foul trouble to win a Hogoheegee District game in Rural Retreat.

Kristie Osborne scored 16 points and Jane Grubb 13 for the Indians (4-0). PH-Glade Spring is 1-1.

Highland 41, Craig County 37: Tara Hiner scored eight of her 11 points in the decisive third quarter as the Rams downed the Rockets in Monterey.

Craig County led 23-17 at the half, but Highland outscored the Rockets 18-5 in the third quarter to pull away. Tammy Shifflett led the Rams (3-2) with 17 points.

Jody Harden led Craig County with 15.

Monday's games

Fort Chiswell 75, Pocahontas 46: Amber Gunter had 22 points, including four 3-point goals, as the Pioneers defeated the Indians in a Mountain Empire District game in Pocahontas.

Tasha Smith added 13 points and Amy Coleman had 11 for Fort Chiswell (2-2, 1-0). The Indians (0-2, 0-1) were paced by Krista Jennings and Pam Nunley with 11 points each.

Northside 66, Liberty 29: The Vikings jumped on the Minettes early and coasted to the non-district victory in Bedford.

Liberty (0-5) was 0-for-7 from the field and had 10 turnovers while being shut out in the first quarter.

Northside (4-1) was led by Rosse Hopkins, who scored 14 points. Five other Vikings had at least seven points.

Selena Byers led Liberty with seven points and eight rebounds.
