PIONEERS WIN EASILY

Amber Gunter had 22 points, including four 3-point goals, as Fort Chiswell pounded Pocahontas 75-46 in a Mountain Empire District girls' basketball game Tuesday night in Pocahontas.

Tasha Smith added 13 points and Amy Coleman had 11 for the Pioneers (2-2, 1-0), who led 39-25 at halftime and stretched their lead with a strong third quarter.

Pocahontas (0-2, 0-1) was paced by Krista Jennings and Pam Nunley with 11 points each.

Northside 66, Liberty 29: The Vikings jumped on the Minettes early and coasted to a non-district victory in Bedford.

Liberty (0-5) was 0-for-7 from the field and had 10 turnovers while being shut out in the first quarter.

Northside (4-1) was led by Rosse Hopkins, who scored 14 points. Five other Vikings had at least seven points.

Selena Byers led Liberty with seven points and eight rebounds.
