Stanislav Licul scored on a rebound in the 87th minute as Virginia Tech edged Winthrop 2-1 on Thursday in a men's soccer game in Rock Hill, S.C.
Matt Whalen scored the first goal for the Hokies (3-2) in the 10th minute, and it was his shot that set up Licul's winner.
Ricard Golzi scored the lone goal for Winthrop (2-2), tying it at 1 in the 30th minute.
In other college soccer games in the region:
* Freshman midfielder Jamie Parker scored two goals, including the winner in the 87th minute, as Washington and Lee nipped Shenandoah 2-1 in a men's opener in Lexington.
Parker's second goal came less than a minute after the Generals' Colin Connolly cleared a shot that had beaten goalie Anthony Mazzarelli.
William Greygor scored the goal for Shenandoah.
* Ferrum and Guilford tied 3-3 in a women's game in Greensboro, N.C.
After the teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation, the Panthers' Susan Sauter scored in the second minute of overtime. Tina Beahan, who also had an assist, tied it again for Guilford (1-1-1).
Hillary Wager led Ferrum (0-1-1) with a goal and an assist, and Jennifer Way also had a goal.
AUTO RACING FCS rolls on Saturday
A $1,000 Any Car race is the highlight of the Taylor Paving 250 on Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway.
Also on the card are a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race and Pure Stock, Rookie and Mini Stock events. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for youngsters ages 6-10 and free for children under 6. Gates open at 3 p.m. and the first race takes the green flag at 8.
