CARROLL COUNTY WORKS OVERTIME FOR WIN

Chelsea Stoneman made a steal and converted a layup in overtime to put Carroll County ahead to stay and the Cavaliers held on for a 73-70 victory over Grayson County in a non-district thriller in Hillsville.

Carroll County (3-3) got 19 points from Stoneman, 18 from Tracy Leonard and 15 from Angie Farmer.

Lindsay Carico led all players with 30 points for the Blue Devils (0-5), with 19 coming in the second half and overtime.

Both teams missed shots at the end of regulation that would have won the game.

Laurel Park 48, Salem 45: The Lancers got 22 points from Tiffany Lynch and a poor free-throw shooting effort from the Spartans as Laurel Park edged Salem in Martinsville.

Sarah Palmer, who finished with 16 points, pulled the Spartans to 48-45 with 1:31 left, but they could not capitalize from the line, missing five free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Salem went 1-for-10 from the line in the final period and 3-of-14 for the game. The Lancers hit 12 of 15.

Lynch scored 12 of her points in the first quarter, when the Lancers outscored the Spartans 21-10, mostly on fast-break opportunities.

Brandy Martin added 17 points for Laurel Park. Erin Collins scored 15 for Salem.

Magna Vista 68, Tunstall 65, OT: Jennifer Taylor hit a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining in the extra period as the Warriors nipped the Trojans in a non-district contest in Ridgeway.

Taylor made the wide-open shot following a timeout. Sandi Reid paced Magna Vista (3-3) with 20 points, Moranda Wade added 16 and Taylor finished with 13. Wade, Kim Brown and Katrina Redd hit clutch free throws in overtime to keep the Warriors in contention.

Tunstall's Melissa Nixon hit a 3-pointer to force overtime. Nixon paced the Trojans with 22 points and Sherita Price added 18.

Giles 53, Rocky Gap 46: The Spartans survived the Eagles and a rare rain delay to win by seven in a non district game in Pearisburg.

Giles (2-4) held a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter when a thunderstorm blew rain into the gym, forcing a delay. After the game resumed, Rocky Gap (4-2) cut the lead to one, but that was as close as it would get the rest of the way.

Kristen White led Giles with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Melissa Leedy paced the Eagles with 15 points.

George Wythe 59, Rural Retreat 53: Alethea Lemieux scored 16 points to help the Maroons (3-3) hold on for a Hogoheegee District victory over the Indians (4-1) in Wytheville.

Lemieux scored the Maroons' first six points to help them lead 19-10 after the first quarter. She also had 13 rebounds. Sandra Jenkins came off the bench to score six of her 13 in the first quarter for Wythe. Lisa Garland added 12 points.

Rural Retreat cut the Maroons' lead to two points in the fourth quarter, but was unable to pull ahead at any point during the game. Krystal Dale scored a game-high 17 points for the Indians in their first lost of the season.

Fieldale-Collinsville 43, Heritage 39: The Cavaliers fell behind early, but used a strong second half to defeat the Pioneers in a non-district game in Lynchburg.

Fieldale-Collinsville was led by Carrie Quinlan's 21 points. Michelle Anderson paced Heritage with 15 points.

Harrisonburg 54, Rockbridge County 32: The Wildcats stayed close until a third-quarter run in the non-district game in Harrisonburg.

Rockbridge County (1-4) was led by Ashley McClain's 13 points. Jamie Kohlenstein scored 25 points for the Blue Streaks (5-0).

Alleghany 70, Parry McCluer 43: Senior Natasha Chapman scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Mountaineers to an easy non-district victory over the Fighting Blues in Low Moor.

The Mountaineers (4-0) had a 20-17 lead after the first quarter, but were able to turn up their defensive pressure to slow the Parry McCluer offense. Katie Craft added 13 points for Alleghany.

Nikki Barger scored 17 points and Clarissa Johnson added 12 points for the Fighting Blues (3-3).

Bassett 56, Staunton River 45: Heather Miller scored a game-high 22 points to help the Bengals hold on for a non-district victory over the Golden Eagles in Bassett.

Miller scored eight of her 22 points in the first quarter to help the Bengals (5-0) take control.

The Golden Eagles tried to fight back in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome a 21-point deficit. Staunton River was paced by Penny Forrest, who scored 14 points. Erin Wolfe added 10.

Christiansburg 43, Auburn 26: Lisa Dalton scored 16 points and Tish Campbell added 11 as the Blue Demons shot down the Eagles in a non-district contest in Christiansburg.

The Demons (4-1) padded a four-point halftime by wearing down Auburn with changing defenses and transition baskets in the second half.

The Eagles went 6-of-13 from the free-throw line. Christiansburg hit seven of 13 shots, including five of nine in the final period.

Patrick County 54, Chatham 41: Anitra Huff led the way with 12 points as the Cougars picked up a non-district victory over the Cavaliers in Chatham.

Patrick County led 27-24 at halftime, but was able to pull away in the second half. Holly Weber contributed 11 points and Summer East added 10 points for the Cougars (6-1).

The Cavaliers (1-3) were led by Claudia White, who scored 10 points.

Radford 63, Fort Chiswell 34: The Bobcats jumped on the Pioneers early and cruised to a non-district victory in Radford.

The Bobcats (5-3) were led by Charlee Taylor's 20 points and eight steals. Jennifer Shelor and Amanda Day added 10 points each for Radford.

Fort Chiswell (3-3) was led by Amber Gunter and Amy Coleman with 11 points each.

Floyd County 80, Blacksburg 61: The Buffaloes relied on strong shooting from the free-throw line to defeat the Indians in a non-district game in Floyd.

Blacksburg (3-4) cut its deficit to six points late in the third quarter, but the Buffaloes (6-1) went 15-for-21 from the line in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Casey Beamer, Andrea Feret, Kelly Houghton and Karly Geller each scored in double figures for the Indians. Floyd County was led by Sara Conner and Karen Pursifull, who scored 20 and 14 points, respectively.

Glenvar 73, Craig County 21: Erika Hale led a balanced attack with 26 points, 14 in the first half, as the Highlanders dominated the Rockets in a non-district matchup in New Castle.

Lindsay Huffman paced Craig County (0-6) with nine points.

Glenvar is 3-3.

Martinsville 66, Liberty 39: The Bulldogs switched from zone to man-to-man defense in the second quarter to seize control of a non-district game in Martinsville.

Erica Brandon had 17 points to lead four Bulldogs scorers in double figures. Martinsville (1-3) outscored Liberty 44-20 in the middle two quarters after the change.

Liberty (1-5) got a team-high 14 points from Catherine Saunders.

Wednesday's game

Fieldale-Collinsville 56, Dan River 28: The Cavaliers used a big game from Carrie Quinlan to post a non-district victory in Ringgold. Quinlan scored a game-high 18 points and added eight rebounds and five steals.
