Art lecture tonight
The Art Museum of Western Virginia has rescheduled the lecture by Franklin Kelly tonight at 7.
Kelly will speak on ``Ruined Towers and Towering Trees: Landscaped from the Hudson River School'' in conjunction with the museum's current exhibit, ``American Art from the Currier Gallery of Art.''
A public reception will begin at 8. A $10 fee includes the lecture, reception and admission to the exhibit. The lecture will be in the museum's second floor lecture hall. Call 342-5760.
Ballet auditions
The Southwest Virginia Ballet Company will hold auditions Sunday at the Post School of Ballet in Roanoke.
Dancers who are at least 11 will audition for the junior company from 2 to 3 p.m. Dancers 13 and older will audition for the senior company from 4 to 5 p.m. The auditions will be a class with pointe work included.

Preservation forum
Roanoke College and Bell Atlantic of Virginia will sponsor a forum featuring Sue M. Clark of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., Oct. 9 at noon in Hotel Roanoke's Crystal Ballroom. Clark will speak on ``Securing the Future by Preserving the Past: Sharing the Entrepreneurial Spirit'' in discussing the history of the estate.
The cost is $16 and reservations are required. Reservations will be accepted first-come, first-served. For information or reservations, call 375-2354.
Books sought for sale
Friends of the Bedford Public Library is seeking donations of books for its fall book sale Sept. 28 at Bedford Central Library. Books of all kinds are sought, except for Reader's Digest condensed books. Textbooks must have been published since 1990.

Program on author
Friends of the Bedford Public Library will give a Virginia Artist and Authors program Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bedford Central Library. The event will focus on author Peter Viemeister's seventh book, ``Start All Over - An American's Experience.'' Discover why and how Viemeister, a successful executive, left Grumman Corp. for a new beginning in rural Bedford. The program is free. Call 586-8911.
Edelman to speak
Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund, and son Jonah will speak at the Rainbow of Hope Outreach Conference Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood in Roanoke. The even is free.
The conference continues Wednesday, 8:45 a.m.-3:45 p.m., to teach outreach to youths via leadership development. A ``Youth Development Workforce Development'' luncheon and presentation will be held Wednesday, 12:15-1:30 p.m. There is a $12 fee; pre-registration is required. Roanoke College lecture
Roanoke College will open this year's Henry H. Fowler Public Lecture Series, ``Three Conversations on Freedom,'' with actor, musician and poet Michael Moriarty Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Roanoke College's Bast Center.
Moriarty will speak on ``A Defense of Free Speech.'' He is an advocate of artistic expression uncensored by government. Moriarty was a member of the cast of the TV series ``Law & Order,'' has appeared in a number of films, including ``Courage Under Fire,'' had recorded three albums of jazz and has published a volume of poetry.

Music workshop
Joan Crane of Illinois, a country and blues guitarist, will give a workshop at the Sedalia Center on Sept. 26, 7 to 9 p.m. Crane is a finger-style guitar instructor in Michigan.
Participants should have a basic knowledge of chords and some finger-picking experience. The fee is $20 ($15 by Sept. 20). To register, call (804) 299-5080. The center is in Big Island, north of Bedford.
