A SELF-IMPOSED SILENCING

Virginia Tech professor Jon Polifrone's "Requiem: For those we love" premiered to a standing-room only crowd at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church in 1993. But if the composer has his way, local crowds won't hear his music again. In a letter to some 3,000 people around the country, Polifrone says he wants his work silenced in Virginia. "In my last faculty evaluation," he wrote, "it was made clear to me my 'image' within the music department among my colleagues, the students and community people was that of a composer ... apparently this does not sit well with the personnel committee of the department."
