Try as it might, Heritage was unable to escape Matt Maxey.
The Franklin County place-kicker booted his third field goal with one second left to give the Eagles a come-from-behind 22-21 high school football victory Friday in Rocky Mount.
Maxey started the night with a 51-yard field goal in the first quarter, breaking his school record of 46 yards set last year when he was Timesland's Sizzlin' Sophomore place-kicker.
After that, Heritage seized the momentum behind Dewayne Banks, who scored touchdowns of 67 and 69 yards. That offset a touchdown by Franklin County's Henry Eggleston, giving the Pioneers (1-2) a 14-10 lead early in the third period.
After Heritage's Brian Harris recovered an Eagle fumble in the end zone to make it 21-10, Franklin County (2-1) was in trouble.
With 2:31 left in the game, the Eagles' rally got a start as Maxey booted his second field goal from the 15.
Franklin County recovered an onside kick that set up Eggleston's second touchdown to make it 21-19 after the tying attempt for a two-point conversion run failed.
The Eagles recovered yet another onside kick and a 15-yard penalty moved the ball to the Heritage 30 with 38 seconds left. Franklin County picked up a quick first down and after spiking the ball to stop the clock with one tick left, Maxey booted a 37-yard to win the game.
Banks rushed for 182 yards on 19 carries to lead Heritage, but Brandon Smith with 118 yards on 14 carries and Travis Ferguson with 93 yards on 20 carries offset this for the Eagles.
Floyd County 28, Auburn 14: Nick Wohn accounted for 266 yards of total offense and scored two touchdowns as the Buffaloes won a Three Rivers District game in Floyd.
Wohn rushed for 177 yards and had scoring runs of 5 and 23 yards as Floyd County (2-1, 1-0) broke open a close game with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Phillip Gillespie had a 23-yard touchdown reception, blocked a punt and had an interception for the Buffaloes.
Auburn (1-2, 0-1) got a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown from Brian Wright and a 1-yard scoring run from Jason Phipps.
Alleghany 14, Covington 7: Sophomore quarterback Shannon Johnson had a mistake-free night as the Mountaineers topped the Cougars in Valley Ridge.
Johnson completed 11 of 17 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, one to Robert Nicely and another to Adam Harlow.
Covington (0-3) got on the board with 4:42 to go when Tracy Walker caught a 7-yard pass from William Stewart, but could not capitalize on the ensuing onside kick.
Brian Carroll had 87 of Alleghany's 95 rushing yards. Shaun Smith led the Cougars with 42 yards on 10 carries.
The Mountaineers moved to 1-1 on the season.
Magna Vista 38, Tunstall 12: The Warriors took advantage of a blocked punt and two fumble recoveries in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind victory in Ridgeway.
Magna Vista trailed 12-8 after three quarters before scoring 30 in the fourth. Chad Blackstock and Ceron Penn each ran for two touchdowns for the Warriors (2-0). Blackstock had 142 yards on six carries, while Penn had 52 yards on eight.
Tunstall (1-1) actually outgained Magna Vista for the game, 311 yards-299 yards. Ron Martin led the way with 79 yards on 10 carries. Beandre Strange had six carries for 69 yards.
Chilhowie 30, George Wythe 0: The Warriors attacked the Maroons from every direction, keeping them winless in a Hogoheegee District game in Chilhowie.
Jarrod Thompson was an all-purpose penetrator, scoring the game's first touchdown on a 68-yards punt return and later catching three passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Harley Davidson completed four of seven passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Chilhowie's Charlie Goble had 127 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. The Warriors (3-0, 3-0 Hogoheegee District) outgained George Wythe (0-3, 0-2) 302 yards-146.
Radford 46, Grayson County 21: The Bobcats calmed things down as the game went on and cruised to a non-district victory in Radford.
Radford trailed 21-20 at halftime, but held the Blue Devils scoreless the rest of the way. At that point, the Bobcats really got going. Mike Dunbar rushed for his second touchdown of the night and Marlon Wesley (11 carries for 115 yards) got two quick ones
Quarterback Adam Artrip kept things mixed up for Radford (2-1), completing 7 of 15 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown to Phillip Hicks.
Chad McMillian led the Blue Devils (1-1) with 151 yards on 15 carries.
Rockbridge County 29, Turner Ashby 28: Rockbridge County survived a passing battle with a great defensive play to hold off Turner Ashby.
The Wildcats' Travis Clark connected on four touchdown passes, ran an extra point and threw for one to account for most of Rockbridge County's scoring. Turner Ashby quarterback Jeremy Harsh threw three touchdown passes, the last one coming with 44 seconds remaining to make it a one-point game. Then Rockbridge County (1-1) stopped a run by Jonathan Wilfong for the two-point conversion that would have won the game.
Rural Retreat 25, Fort Chiswell 7: Gene Fields rushed for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Indians won a non-district game in Rural Retreat.
Rural Retreat (2-1) dominated, allowing only 89 total yards to the Pioneers (1-2).
Rural Retreat outgained Fort Chiswell 354 total yards to 89.
Staunton River 57, Fieldale-Collinsville 27:
The Golden Eagles outdistanced themselves from the Cavaliers with a 20-point second quarter en route to a 30 point win in Collinsville.
Jarrett Ferguson led Staunton River with 239 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Kevin Martin added four touchdowns for the Golden Eagles. Fieldale-Collinsville dropped to 1-2 on the season.
East Hardy (W.Va.) 20, Bath County 14: East Hardy dominated group A state champ Bath County on the ground and in the air for the non-district victory in Hot Springs.
The Chargers were only able to make 6 first downs against East Hardy's 25 first downs. Adam Simmons rushed for 135 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown. East Hardy (1-1) rushed for 310 yards against the Chargers' 235 yards and passed for 134 yards to Bath County's 10 yards.
Brandon Wodard rushed for 155 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown for the Chargers. The loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Chargers (2-1).
Carroll County 54, Galax 0: Billy Clougher had a career day, rushing 14 times for 168 yards and five touchdowns, as the Cavaliers whipped the Maroon Tide in a non-district matchup in Hillsville.
Clougher, a junior, scored on runs of 20, 20, 27, 3 and 20 yards and scored in every quarter except the last for Carroll County (1-2).
Senior Trey Manning added 102 yards on 17 carries as the Cavaliers collected 375 yards on the ground.
Galax was held to 67 yards of total offense and fell to 0-3.
Pocahontas 20, Bland County 0: Michael Carter passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Indians captured a Mountain Empire District victory in Pocahontas.
Pocahontas (2-1, 1-0) also relied on the running of Randy Shupe, who gained 188 yards on 20 carries and completed the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run.
Carter had a 30-yard scoring pass to Ricky Graham in the first quarter and ran 1 yard for a touchdown in the third quarter. Pocahontas amassed 317 yards on the night.
Bland County (1-2, 1-2) was limited to 85 total yards.
Bassett 20, Patrick County 10: Carl Watkins rushed for 69 carries on 15 carries and a touchdown to help the Bengals to a victory in their opening Piedmont District game in Stuart.
The Bengals (2-1, 1-0) had a 20-3 halftime lead, but were shutout in the second half. They were able to hold the Cougars (0-3, 0-1) to only one touchdown, a 1 yard run by David Marson.
Bassett scored on a 24 yard run by T.K. Johnson, a 2 yard run by Carl Watkins, and a 2 yard run by Corie Manns.
Dan River 19, Laurel Park 7: Joe Saunders ran for two touchdowns and the Wildcats capitalized on four Laurel Park turnovers to beat the Lancers in Martinsville.
Saunders had 18 carries for 123 yards and scored on runs of 3 and 1 yard for Dan River (3-0). Phillip Loftis tossed a 5-yard pass to Steve Syndor for the other score.
Steve Robertson tossed a 79-yard scoring pass to Winston Coles for Laurel Park's lone touchdown. The Lancers (0-3) had three interceptions and fumbled once.
Blacksburg 15, Cave Spring 14: Joey Carter caught a two-point conversion pass from Tommy Laforce with 3:42 to play as the visiting Indians kept the Knights winless.
The conversion was the difference in the game. The play was set up when Blacksburg blocked a Cave Spring punt, which was recovered by Cave Spring's T.J. Chevone on the Knights' 2-yard line. The Indians took over on downs, and three plays later, Michael Davis scored a touchdown.
Davis finished with 86 yards on 13 carries to lead Blacksburg (1-2). Brad Nichols was the game's leading rusher (24-113 yards) and he gave the Knights a 14-7 lead late in third on a 71-yard run. Each team lost three fumbles in the game.
Although it had 186 total yards compared to Blacksburg's 138, Cave Spring fell to 0-3.
Shawsville 27, Craig County 0: Chris Graham was involved in all four touchdowns as the Shawnees shut out the Rockets in a non-district game at New Castle.
Graham had touchdown runs of 1 and 13 yards and tossed two scoring passes, a 28-yarder to Brian Caswell and a 27-yarder to Anthony Creasy. Graham finished with 95 yards on 15 carries and completed 12 of 19 passes for 179 yards and one interception.
Caswell also caught four passes for 73 yards as Shawsville (2-0) finished with 344 yards of total offense.
Jarvis Pauley had 23 carries for 128 yards for Craig County (0-3). The Rockets were held to 163 yards of offense.
Parry McCluer 13, Riverheads 7: Daniel Clark ran for 94 yards and a touchdown as the Fighting Blues won a non-district game at Riverheads.
Clark scored on an 8-yard run and Jeremiah Brockenbrough scored from 1 yard out for Parry McCluer (2-1). Robert Snider set up Parry McCluer's first touchdown with a 60-yard punt return to the Riverheads 20 in the first quarter.
Riverheads (0-3) avoided a shutout by scoring with 1:25 left in the game, but Parry McCluer recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.
Graham 25, Christiansburg 12: The G-Men used a stingy defensive effort in their non-district win over the Demons in Christiansburg.
Walter Kennard led Graham (2-1) with 69 yards rushing on seven carries and two touchdowns. Christiansburg (1-1) managed only 140 yards on total offense.
