PH WHIPS ALBEMARLE ON GROUND

James Hickenbotham rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns Friday night to lead Patrick Henry to a 39-6 victory over Albermarle in Charlottesville.

Hickenbotham scored on runs of 54 and 52 yards as the Patriots (2-0) took a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. Shaun Akers added 73 yards and one touchdown for Patrick Henry.

The Patriots fumbled four times and lost them all, and Albermarle fumbled six times and lost five.

Blacksburg 15, Cave Spring 14: Joey Carter caught a two-point conversion pass from Tommy Laforce with 3:42 to play as the visiting Indians kept the Knights winless.

The conversion was the difference in the game. The play was set up when Blacksburg blocked a Cave Spring punt, which was recovered by Cave Spring's T.J. Chevone on the Knights' 2-yard line. The Indians took over on downs, and three plays later, Michael Davis scored a touchdown.

Davis finished with 86 yards on 13 carries to lead Blacksburg (1-2). Brad Nichols was the game's leading rusher (24-113 yards) and he gave the Knights a 14-7 lead late in third on a 71-yard run. Each team lost three fumbles in the game.

Although it had 186 total yards compared to Blacksburg's 138, Cave Spring fell to 0-3.

North Cross 14, St. Anne's-Belfield13: In Charlottesville, North Cross avenged last year's loss and opened its season with a non-conference victory over St. Anne's Belfield.

The Raiders' Carter Lee scored two first-half touchdowns and rushed for 129 yards on 27 carries.

However, it was North Cross' defense that turned this game. After St. Anne's got two touchdowns from Tripp Callan in the second quarter, Hunter Smith blocked the extra point conversion that would have tied the game.

In the second half, the Raiders' offense didn't move. The defense stopped St. Anne's inside the 10 twice in the final quarter, forcing a fumble and holding on downs. North Cross' victory was clinched when Jason Ward broke up an option with three minutes to go on third down, forcing a punt.

Shawsville 27, Craig County 0: Chris Graham was involved in all four touchdowns as the Shawnees shut out the Rockets in a non-district game at New Castle.

Graham had touchdown runs of 1 and 13 yards and tossed two scoring passes, a 28-yarder to Brian Caswell and a 27-yarder to Anthony Creasy. Graham finished with 95 yards on 15 carries and completed 12 of 19 passes for 179 yards and one interception.

Jarvis Pauley had 23 carries for 128 yards for Craig County (0-3). The Rockets were held to 163 yards of offense.
