Try as it might, Heritage was unable to escape Matt Maxey.
The Franklin County place-kicker booted his third field goal with one second left to give the Eagles a come-from-behind 22-21 high school football victory Friday in Rocky Mount.
Maxey started the night with a 51-yard field goal in the first quarter, breaking his school record of 46 yards set last year when he was Timesland's Sizzlin' Sophomore place-kicker.
After that, Heritage seized the momentum behind Dewayne Banks, who scored touchdowns of 67 and 69 yards. That offset a touchdown by Franklin County's Henry Eggleston, giving the Pioneers (1-2) a 14-10 lead early in the third period.
After Heritage's Brian Harris recovered an Eagle fumble in the end zone to make it 21-10, Franklin County (2-1) was in trouble.
With 2:31 left in the game, the Eagles' rally got a start as Maxey booted his second field goal from the 15.
Franklin County recovered an onside kick that set up Eggleston's second touchdown to make it 21-19 after the tying attempt for a two-point conversion run failed.
The Eagles recovered yet another onside kick and a 15-yard penalty moved the ball to the Heritage 30 with 38 seconds left. Franklin County picked up a quick first down and after spiking the ball to stop the clock with one tick left, Maxey booted a 37-yard to win the game.
Banks rushed for 182 yards on 19 carries to lead Heritage, but Brandon Smith with 118 yards on 14 carries and Travis Ferguson with 93 yards on 20 carries offset this for the Eagles.
