Residents of three Hampton neighborhoods will get a chance to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay.
Much of the bay's trouble is caused not by factories but by lawn chemicals, soaps and other pollutants carried by storm water from residential neighborhoods.
``A lot of people aren't aware that their day-to-day activities can affect water quality,'' said Cheryl Copper, environmental relations manager for the Hampton Public Works Department.
The campaign will target 1,500 households in three neighborhoods adjacent to Tidemill Creek, Brights Creek and Back River.
The campaign, called Citizens Responsibly Acting for the Bay, will include trash cleanups, workshops on lawn care and the opportunity for residents to voluntarily monitor water in nearby rivers and streams.
The goal is to gauge people's knowledge of the bay and their interest in helping clean it up, Copper said. The program also will help the city and environmental groups develop strategies for motivating people to feel more responsible for the bay.
``Hopefully, what will result is that people feel a sense of stewardship and ownership,'' Copper said.
