3 MARINES KILLED IN I-95 CAR ACCIDENT SPRINGFIELD

THE MEN'S PICKUP truck slid under a tractor-trailer truck that had stopped to assist a motorist.

Three young Marines were killed early Saturday when their pickup truck crashed into a tractor-trailer that had stopped to assist a motorist on Interstate 95.

Virginia State Police said the accident occurred about 2:40 a.m. at the end of an exit ramp leading from I-95 near Springfield, a suburb of Washington, D.C.

State police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said the pickup went under the tractor-trailer. She said there were no skid marks, which could indicate the driver had fallen asleep.

The victims were identified as the driver, Sgt. Michael Hier, 20, of Hudson, N.H.; and two passengers, Cpl. Cory Rud, 27, of Eau Claire, Wis., and Sgt. Michael Behie, 24, of Kalamazoo, Mich.
