GENERALS SHUT OUT BY URSINUS

Ursinus limited Washington and Lee to 127 total yards and Dan Steigerwalt ran for a pair of touchdowns as the Bears defeated the Generals 27-0 Saturday in Lexington for W&L's first shutout in four years.

Ursinus limited Washington and Lee (1-0) to 95 yards passing and 32 on the ground, while compiling 470 yards. Jonathan Oliver had two sacks for the Bears.

Ursinus improved to 2-0, its best start since 1957.

Steigerwalt ran 14 times for 83 yards, and Brandon Shepherdson rushed 25 times for 121 yards and a touchdown. Steigerwalt scored on runs of 2 and 21 yards, and Shepherdson scored from 11 yards out.

Mark Parks, who scored Ursinus' other touchdown on a 1-yard run, had 64 yards on 10 carries.

It was the first time that Washington and Lee has been shut out since losing to Randolph-Macon 19-0 on Oct. 1, 1994.

In other games:

James Madison 25, McNeese State 10: In Lake Charles, La., Willie Gonzalez threw three touchdown passes to Marcy Brooks, and the Dukes beat the Pokes, dealing the nation's ninth-ranked Division I-AA team a rare third straight loss at home.

The victory improved James Madison to 2-0. McNeese State, which lost at home in the 1995 I-AA semifinals, fell to 0-2 after losing its opener to Southwest Missouri State.

After McNeese State scored the first touchdown of the game only six minutes into the first quarter, the Dukes came back to outscore the Pokes 24-3 the rest of the way.

Citadel 13, Richmond 10: In Charleston, S.C, Stanley Myers scored on a 1-yard plunge with 44 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a victory over the Spiders, breaking The Citadel's 10-game losing streak.

Aaron Green rushed for 139 yards, and Kenyatta Spruill added 110 rushing yards for The Citadel (1-1). The Bulldogs gained 301 yards on the ground, while passing for just 2.

Richmond is 1-1.

Liberty 27, Delaware State 7: In Lynchburg, Lawrence Worthington ran for 242 yards and three touchdowns and scored a fourth touchdown on a pass reception as the Flames defeated Delaware State.

Worthington, who rushed 42 times, scored on runs of 2, 4, and 6 yards. The 242 yards left Worthington 31 yards shy of Liberty's all-time career rushing record of 2,617 yards.

Washington and Jefferson 27, Emory & Henry 7: In Washington, Pa., Jason Baer passed for 134 yards and three touchdowns, and Washington and Jefferson defeated the Wasps in a the season opener for both teams.

Hampden-Sydney 17 Gettysburg 10, OT: In Gettysburg, Pa., quarterback Walt Bondurant threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jason Raper to give the Tigers an overtime victory over Gettysburg.

Bridgewater 18, Bethany 7: In Bethany, W.Va., Mike Padgett kicked three field goals, and the Bridgewater defense forced five turnovers as the Eagles (2-0) beat Bethany.
