The Roanoke Rush, kicking off a three-game road trip, blanked the Triad Wallabees 20-0 in a National Minor League Football game Saturday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Roanoke (4-1 South Atlantic, 5-1 overall) held Triad to 82 yards of offense, while the Rush rolled up 254 yards of offense.
Robert Majors intercepted two passes for 70 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rush defense.
SOCCER VMI rallies for 2nd-half win
VMI scored all its goals in the second half to beat Lynchburg 3-1 in a men's soccer game in Lexington.
Rich Daughtridge scored first for the Keydets (4-2) five minutes into the second half. Phillip Harper added two goals for VMI. John Cardwell scored the lone goal for Lynchburg (1-2-1).
* Roanoke College dropped its opening game of the Domino's Classic at Alumni Field to Richard Stockton 3-1.
The Maroons (1-1-1) will play Cortland State (1-4-0), a 3-2 loser to Methodist (N.C.). Freshman Andy Newton (Cave Spring) scored the Maroons' only goal. Roanoke's game with Cortland State (1-4-0) will start at 1 p.m. today with the championship game between Methodist (2-0) and Richard Stockton (2-0) to follow at 3.
* Salisbury State defeated Ferrum 3-1 in two overtimes in the opening game of the Greensboro College Tournament.
The Seagulls scored at the eight-minute mark of the second overtime on a goal by Keith Chella and again with two minutes remaining for the victory. The Panthers' lone goal was scored by former Cave Spring standout Chris Hewitt at the match's 55-minute mark. Ferrum (0-2) will take on Washington (Md.) College at noon today.
* Radford University defeated St. Peters College 5-1 at the Comfort Inn/Pfeiffer University Soccer Classic. The Highlanders led 4-0 at the half and cruised to the win. Radford plays again today at 1 p.m. against Howard.
* Sam Chase scored both goals Washington and Lee in its 2-1 non-conference victory over Catholic University in Lexington.
Catholic (1-1) scored in the first half and that held up until the 55-minute mark of the game when Chase scored his first goal. He then scored the game winner with 15 minutes left. Washington and Lee improved to 2-0 on the season.
* Virginia Tech surrendered the game's lone goal in the 80th minute in a 1-0 loss to Virginia Commonwealth in a women's game in Richmond. Christina Kenney scored for the Rams (2-3). Virginia Tech (1-1-1) outshot VCU 12-9.
* Hollins got goals from four different players in its 4-2 win over Hood College (Md.) at Hollins. Catherine Carson, Weesie Glendenning, Julie Griggs and Bethany Tracey scored for Hollins (2-0). Hollins outshot Hood (0-3) 25-12.
* Washington and Lee opened its women's season with a 3-2 overtime victory over Virginia Wesleyan in Norfolk. Michelle Bauman scored with 15 seconds left in the second overtime. Nicole Johnson and Erica Reineke added the the other goals for the Generals.
* Roanoke College won the first game of its road trip by beating Widener 2-0 in a women's game. Tori Erickson scored the first goal 18 minutes into the game. The Maroons (3-1) added insurance at the 52-minute mark when Courtney Gross netted a goal.
CROSS COUNTRY UNC-Charlotte sweeps
UNC-Charlotte swept the men's and women's competitions in the 12th Annual UNC-Charlotte Cross Country Invitational at McAlpine-Greenway Park.
Radford placed second in the men's race and third in the women's competition. Sean O'Flaherty finished third overall for the Highlander men and Justin Mosby (Christiansburg) finished fifth.
Jennie Hinchion took fifth place for the Lady Highlanders.
* Virginia Tech's men's and women's team opened the regular season in impressive fashion at the West Virginia Invitational in Morgantown, W.Va.
The men's score was matched against Duquesne, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The Hokies defeated Duquesne 15-48, Pittsburgh 20-41 and West Virginia 24-32. Jason Dowdy of Roanoke finished in the top 10 for the Hokies.
The Tech women won their match with Pittsburgh 20-40 but dropped a decision to West Virginia 32-24.
* Washington and Lee's men's and women's teams opened their respective seasons in the Lebanon Valley Invitational in Annville, Pa. The women finished ninth in a field of 31 teams and the men were 10th of 30.
Roanoke College also competed in the event with the men's team finishing seventh. Brad Reeves (Salem) finished 13th and David Angell (Franklin County) finished 14th. The women's team finished 18th overall. Shelli Stevens (Blacksburg) finished 68th overall.
Hoyas nip Highlanders
Radford dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to Georgetown in field hockey in Radford. Lauren Hilsky scored the game winner for the Hoyas. Radford outshot Georgetown 17-7.
