BASSETT NAMES SENIOR EXECUTIVE

DOUG MILLER has been elected vice president of administration at Bassett Furniture Industries, assuming the administrative responsibilities of B.M. BRAMMER, who recently died. In his new position, Miller will oversee product service, information systems, investor relations and risk management. He also will be involved in special projects including any real estate and merger and acquisition activities.

Miller joined Bassett in 1993 as assistant treasurer. Prior to that, he was assistant treasurer of PHH Corp., and before that, director of project finance at Marriott Corp.

ACCOUNTING

JOHN M. CHRISTOPHER has joined McLeod & Co., a Roanoke certified public accounting firm. He formerly was with KPMG Peat Marwick. In his new position, he will be focusing on specialized tax planning and tax consulting services to clients.

EDUCATION

SYLVIA BAILEY has been named lead agent for the New Century Region literacy coordinating committee, a joint effort between the Department of Education and the Virginia Literacy Initiative. Bailey is the executive coordinator of the Blue Ridge Regional Education and Training Council, a state agency which is a liaison between education and economic development throughout the region.

INSURANCE

BONNIE B. DEANE has been named manager of administration for the the headquarters office of Thomas Rutherfoord Inc. in Roanoke. Deane has also been named assistant corporate secretary of the company, which also has offices in Alexandria, Norfolk and Richmond. She joined Rutherfoord in 1990.

HEALTH CARE

ALFRED "A.J." BENNETT has been promoted to southwest Virginia regional manager of the Old Dominion Eye Bank, which is based in Richmond. Bennett was coordinator of the Abingdon branch office for almost two years, which serves an area including Bland, Wythe, Carroll, Tazewell, Smyth, Grayson, Buchanan, Russell, Washington, Wise, Scott and Lee counties. He was responsible for overseeing public education on eye donation and procuring donor eye tissue from 15 hospitals in the region. As regional manager, Bennett will be in charge of similar activities for the eye bank's Roanoke office.

LAW

JOHN M. HUDDLE has become a member of the Roanoke law firm of Wetherington, Melchionna, Terry, Day & Ammar. He previously was a partner in the law firm of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore, also in Roanoke, where he headed the firm's international practice. In his new position, he will continue his general business and transactional practice, with an emphasis on health care and international law.

CHRISTOPHER J. FROESCHL has opened Due Process, a Roanoke company that provides civil process service for the Roanoke, Shenandoah and New River valleys. Froeschl has 10 years of experience in law enforcement and related businesses, most recently working for a private investigation and security firm.|

MANUFACTURING

BENJAMIN H. O'CONNOR has been promoted to vice president of sales for the health care and government/university divisions at American of Martinsville furniture manufacturer. He joined the company in 1993 and has held several sales positions, most recently sales manager for the health care division. DONALD E. PRUETT, former vice president of government/sales, has been appointed sales representative for strategic areas of the government/university business.

JOHN RUSK has been appointed a designer for Discus Athletic, a unit of Martinsville-based Tultex Corp. which manufactures athletic activewear. Rusk joins Discus Athletic from May Department Stores where he was a head designer responsible for product development in men's knits and the men's active private label program.|

UTILITIES

ED BRADLEY has been named human resources director of American Electric Power Co.'s energy delivery group for the seven-state AEP system. Bradley formerly was director of the Roanoke human resources service delivery center serving Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky. STEVE JAMISON, formerly manager of compensation and benefits in Roanoke, has succeeded Bradley as director of the Roanoke service delivery center. The AEP System includes portions of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee.
