DUDLEY ROLLS TO VICTORY IN LATE MODEL

Mike Dudley passed leader Wayne Corprew on the 38th lap and went on to victory Saturday night in the feature race at Franklin County Speedway.

Dudley won the 50-lap Late Model Stock portion of the Taylor Paving 250.

Corprew finished second and pole-winner Leon Dalton was third.

In the wildest race of the night, Harland Dalton of Hillsville outlasted the Rookie field to capture his first victory.

Bob Creggar of Vinton flipped several times down the frontstretch and came to rest on his roof. He had his crew flip the car upright and drove it back to the pit area.

James Carr of Rocky Mount was second and Kenneth Sowers of Floyd took third.

Gary Joyce won the Mini Stock race ahead of James Cox and Stacy Laprade; Mike Newbill won the Any Car division; and Red Hartman was the Pure Stock winner ahead of Jay Perry and Kevin Ransom.

In other sports in the region:

Chip Sullivan won the Newport News Centennial Open golf tournament Sunday.

Sullivan, the teaching pro at Hanging Rock Golf Course in Salem, birdied the 18th hole and shot a final round of 2-under-par 70 to force a playoff with amateur Allan Barber of James River.

Sullivan birdied the third playoff hole to earn the $1,600 winner's check.

Mike Carey had a goal and an assist as Ferrum defeated Washington (Md.) 3-2 in the Greensboro College men's soccer tournament in Greensboro, N.C. John Gillis and David Carey also scored for the Panthers (1-2).

Roanoke scored with 10 minutes remaining in the second half to tie Cortland State 1-1 in the consolation game of the Domino's Classic men's soccer tournament in Salem. Methodist (N.C.) defeated Richard Stockton (N.J.) 2-1 in the championship.

Briean Garrity scored off a crossing pass from Suzanne Greenburg 11 minutes into the game as Rowan beat Roanoke 1-0 in a women's soccer match in Glassboro, N.J. Roanoke is 3-2, Rowan is 4-2.

Richmond scored two goals in the first half to defeat Virginia Tech 2-1 in a women's soccer match in Richmond. Freshman Shannon Otto scored Tech's only goal on a penalty kick in the 80th minute of play.

In Radford, Elizabeth Michinard scored all three goals for the Highlanders as they nipped Kent 3-2 in field hockey.
