WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND

D-Democrat R-Republican

``I am violently opposed to the Lake Gaston Pipeline and I would like to ask how the candidates could impede the progress of the project and what the next step would be.'' Lynn Loftus, Pulaski

U.S. SENATE

Mark Warner (D)

``With construction already underway and millions of dollars being spent on it, it appears that the Lake Gaston Pipeline will be a reality. I was surprised by the recent disclosure of information about the additional capacity of Norfolk's water system. I will work to make sure that any further decisions on Lake Gaston are based upon all the facts.''

John Warner (R)

``I respect the sincerity of the views of those opposed to the Lake Gaston project. I am persuaded, however, by the numerous federal and independant studies over the years which confirm that the pipeline will not adversely impact water levels of the lake nor the water quality of the Roanoke River. Sufficient water flows remain in the river to meet future economic development needs of the region.''

5TH DISTRICT HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Virgil Goode (D)

``I am a plaintiff in Goode v. City of Virginia Beach, which seeks to prevent Virginia Beach from taking our water. Although my opponent has said this is not a federal issue, I would oppose the federal applications that are required to build the pipeline and would support federal legislation to stop the pipeline.''

George Landrith (R)

``I strongly oppose Virginia Beach taking water from the Roanoke River Basin. I argued before the Federal Energy Commission that removing over 60 million gallons of water a day from this area would have a catastrophic impact on our economy and environment. I will continue to fight to keep our water here.''
