POOL NO TROUBLE FOR THIS RIVER CITY

An open tournament is held at 7:30 p.m. Sundays and ladies' tournaments are held at 8 p.m. Mondays. All tournament have a $5 entry fee to be donated to a designated charity.

"We had six people in last Sunday's tournament and considering it was only our second week, I thought that was a pretty good turnout," said 1106 Tavern owner Charlie Whitescarver. "I think 10 or 12 players would make a good tournament, so that's the numbers we're shooting for."

For the time being, the beneficiary of the Sunday night tournaments is the Radford Kiwanis Foundation. Monday night's earnings will go to the Women's Resource Center.

Whitescarver said he'd like to involve other charities, as well.

"I like doing things for charities - things just like this," Whitescarver said. "Those are our two charities for now, but I'd like to talk to different charities who would like to be the beneficiary of the money and can help promote the event as well."

For their part, winners will be awarded gift certificates from Radford businesses and possibly other prizes as well. Participants will also be entitled to 50 percent discounts on food and free soft drinks during tournaments.

Clearly, the new restaurant is also new to the tournament business, as one line from its press release might indicate: "Tournaments will be double elimination with each contestant being allowed one loss."

Sign-ups are held 15 minutes prior to the start of the event and Valley National Eight Ball Association rules apply. The rules will be explained to participants in a players' meeting five minutes prior to each tournament.

PUNT, PASS & KICK The Blacksburg Jaycees will be hosting the National Football League's annual punt, pass and kick competition at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Blacksburg Recreation Center on Patrick Henry Drive. Boys and girls ages 8-15 will compete separately for the first time. All participants must show proof of age.

Winners will advance to a section competition, then to the Redskins' Championship team to compete at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
