UVA TOPS POLL IN FIELD HOCKEY

The University of Virginia field hockey team is ranked No.1 in the season's first poll, the first time the Cavaliers have held the top spot in the coaches' poll.

Virginia (5-0) received all six first-place votes to outdistance 1995 NCAA champion North Carolina (4-0).

Old Dominion (5-0) is ranked fourth, with William and Mary (3-1) 16th and James Madison (3-3) 18th.

In other sports news in the region:

* Virginia Tech coach Jay Hardwick and teammate Wayne Holley tied for third at the Mid-Atlantic PGA's inaugural Nukui Cup two-man team championship in Stafford.

Roger Simpkins and Paul Prudhomme shot 17-under-par 127 to breeze to a six-shot victory over Rick Schuller and Marty O'Rear on the 6,810-yard Augustine Golf Club course, earning the first-place prize of $4,863. Hardwick and Holley, who plays out of Roanoke's Big Lick Driving Range, shot 69-66-135 to earn $1,725. Billy King of Blue Hills and teammate Mike Moyers of Charlottesville tied for ninth at 137, and Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock and Rock Herrelko of Richmond tied for 15th at 138.

* Jesus Martin scored twice in the first half to lead Richmond to a 4-1 victory over VMI in a men's soccer game in Richmond.

Adrian Cox and Erin Wilson also scored for the Spiders (3-1). Michael Maire had the goal for the Keydets (4-3).

* Jake Edwards scored twice on breakaways to lead James Madison to a 3-0 victory over Radford in a men's soccer game at Dedmon Center Field.

Mike Brizendine scored the other goal for the Dukes (4-0). Radford is 3-3-1.

* The Roanoke College men's soccer team will play host to Maryville (Tenn.) at 1p.m. Saturday, not 3p.m. as originally scheduled.
