Susan Wirt's flip shot rolled in at the buzzer as Auburn overcame 25 turnovers to edge Galax 45-44 on Tuesday night in a non-district matchup in Riner.
Auburn (4-6) took a five-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Galax (2-2) went in front for the first time on a shot by Erin Kyle with 33 seconds to go. The Eagles then worked the clock before Deanna Dickerson's cross-court pass found Wirt for the winner.
Dickerson led Auburn with 20 points and Wirt finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kyle scored 15 points to pace the Maroon Tide.
Northside 57, Christiansburg 36: Juniors Samantha Webb and Crystal Barrett led the way for the Vikings as they downed the visiting Blue Demons in their opening Blue Ridge District game.
Webb scored a game-high 16 points and added six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Barrett contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings (6-1). Amber Reed led Christiansburg (4-2) with 14 points.
Salem 60, Blacksburg 55: In Blacksburg, Erin Patrick scored six of her 13 points in a 12-2 run to open the third quarter that carried the Spartans past the Indians in the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams.
Sarah Palmer led Salem (6-1) with 21 points. Karly Geller had 14 points for Blacksburg (3-5).
Alleghany 73, Rockbridge County 60: Katie Craft scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Mountaineers past the Wildcats in Low Moor in the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams.
Craft added 12 assists and six steals for Alleghany (4-1). The Mountaineers were able to contain Rockbridge County with their full-court pressure defense. Natasha Chapman contributed 23 points.
Kate Ides led the Wildcats (2-5) with 14 points.
Grayson County 63, Bland 44: In Bland, clutch shooting pulled the Blue Devils further ahead each time the Rockets threatened and Grayson County went on to a victory in the Mountain Empire District opener for both teams.
Kelly Dunn led Bland (0-7) with 15 points.
Liberty 59, Heritage 56, OT: Teona Callaham scored eight of her team-high 24 points in overtime to lead the Minettes (2-7) past the Pioneers in Lynchburg.
Martinsville 77, Tunstall 73: Erica Brandon scored 22 of her game-high 28 points in the second half as the Bulldogs (3-3) edged the Trojans (0-4) for a non-district victory in Martinsville.
Magna Vista 63, Carroll County 38: The Warriors used a man-to-man press in the first half and shot better than 50 percent from the field in the second half to beat the Cavaliers in Hillsville.
Magna Vista (4-3) was led by Sandi Reid's 21 points and Hope Fulcher's 10.
Carroll County (3-5) got 11 from Angie Farmer.
Fort Chiswell 68, Pocahontas 37: The Pioneers (4-3, 2-0) controlled the lane and just about everything else in a Mountain Empire District victory in Fort Chiswell.
Amber Gunter had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pioneers, and Kelly Reynolds had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Indians were led by Pam Nunley, who scored 10 points.
Narrows 65, Rocky Gap 57: Suzanne Webb scored six points of her 18 points in a 9-0 run to end the first quarter as the Green Wave downed the visiting Eagles in a Mountain Empire District opener.
The first-quarter run enabled Narrows (6-2) to erase a four-point deficit. The Green Wave never trailed again, building a 21-point advantage before Rocky Gap (5-4) made the final score respectable.
Melissa Leedy led the Eagles with 17 points.
Shawsville 78, Craig County 27: The Shawnees' three-pronged attack paced them to a non-district victory in New Castle.
Megan Forster led Shawsville with 25 points (10 in the third quarter) and Beth Burdette and Sarah Hagood had 20 and 14, respectively. Lindsay Huffman played a tough game for the Rockets, scoring 12 points.
Chilhowie 49, George Wythe 36: Emily Blevins scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Warriors to a Hogoheegee District victory over the Maroons in Chilhowie.
Blevins also contributed six assists for the Warriors (4-4 overall, 3-0 district).
Megan Johnson led the way for Wythe (3-4, 1-1) with 13 points.
Covington 58, Buffalo Gap 53: Melissa Page scored 22 points to help the Cougars (4-2) pull out a non-district victory over the Bison (0-6) in the fourth quarter.
Buffalo Gap led 43-40 at the end of the third quarter and was up by two with 3:31 left in the game. The Cougars and Page were able to win the game from the free-throw line. Page made 18 of 23 free throws in the game and Buffalo Gap made only two of 14 free throws in the fourth period.
Monday's game
Laurel Park 47, Chatham 35: Shermika Harris scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as the Lancers held off the Cavaliers in a non-district contest in Chatham
