ONE PERSON'S TRASH COULD BE JUST THE THING

Roanoke Valley pack rats have two chances to "Take It or Leave It" and at the same time help the environment.

The "Take It or Leave It" program, which allows people to get rid of or take home for free "clean, useful" items otherwise bound for the landfill, will be held Sunday and Oct. 20 from 1 to 5 p.m., rain or shine, at the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority Transfer Station at 1020 Hollins Road, the Clean Valley Council said.

Books may be placed in the "Books for Africa" project bin and clothing may be left for Goodwill Industries Tinker Mountain at the first shelter. All other items will be placed on the transfer station floor, the council said.

Household hazardous waste, trash, recyclables, car parts, mattresses, tires, building materials and carpet will not be accepted. (Call the council to list building supplies available for others to pick up free from construction sites.)
