Fall River Renaissance, a state-sponsored campaign to encourage volunteers to help conserve and improve Virginia's rivers and other bodies of water, will begin Saturday.
The campaign will promote such activities as volunteer water monitoring, trash pickups and stream-bank stabilization, and will develop and promote educational programs aimed at conserving water resources, the state Department of Conservation and Recreation said.
The following activities are planned locally:
*Volunteers will clean trash and other debris from four miles of shoreline at Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Bedford County Sept. 27-28. There will also be a small river/lake ecology interpretive program. Call Tom Witowski at 297-6066 for more information.
*Trash cleanups in the stocked trout areas of Tinker Creek and Glade Creek in Roanoke will be held Saturday through Oct. 21. Contact Bud LaRoche at 857-7704 to learn more.
