NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS LARRY W. ANGLIN of Buchanan recently returned to Norfolk after completing a six-month deployment aboard the destroyer USS Caron in the Persian Gulf. Anglin's ship helped enforce U.N. sanctions against Iraq.
Anglin is a 1993 graduate of James River High School.
NAVY SEAMAN JONATHAN R. SOWERS, son of Regina Vassar of Roanoke, recently completed a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean aboard the guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain. He took part in the enforcement of U.N. sanctions against Iraq.
Sowers, a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, is currently stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
NAVY PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS BRIAN P. SCHENKEL, son of Jerry Schenkel and Diane Turner of Roanoke, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He was honored for his superior performance while serving with the Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Schenkel is a 1987 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
MARINE PFC. STEVEN J. ST. CLAIR, son of Keneth and Nancy Feazell of Troutville, recently completed basic training with Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his present rank.
St. Clair is a 1988 graduate of Fleming High School.
MARINE PVT. IAN D. HUMPHREYS, son of Larry Humphreys of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C.

Master Sgt. H. Dean Jones of Roanoke, Sgt. Dean W. Wood of Copper Hill and Spc. Ramon Santana of Vinton received Army Achievement Medals.
NAVY AIRMAN DERRALL D. REYNOLDS, son of Tammy S. Reynolds of Roanoke, recently completed a six-month deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.
Reynolds joined the Navy after his graduation from William Fleming High School in 1994.
AIRMAN KRISTIAN R. BROWN, son of Lawrence and Charlotte Brown of Vinton, recently completed a six-month deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas and the Persian Gulf.
Brown, a 1992 graduate of William Byrd High School, is stationed at Naval Air Station Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Fla.
NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS WELLYN C. SELLERS, son of Myra W. Sellers of Roanoke, recently completed a six-month deployment aboard the missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts in the Adriatic Sea.
Sellers, a 1984 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is stationed in Norfolk.
NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS GARY L. HAWKS, son of Joyce Hawks of Salem, recently returned to Norfolk after completing a six-month deployment aboard the guided missile cruiser USS San Jacinto. Serving in the Adriatic Sea, Hawks took part in enforcement of the international embargo against the former Yugoslavia.
He is a 1982 graduate of Salem High School.
NAVY AIRMAN BRANDON R. CORNETT, son of Jim Cornett and Joyce Ellis of Roanoke, recently completed the Basic Aviation Ordnanceman Course on aircraft weapons systems with honors.
Cornett is a 1991 graduate of Cave Spring High School and a 1995 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.
JOHN M. GAULDIN II, son of John and Cynthia Gauldin of Eagle Rock, recently graduated from leadership training and evaluation at the U.S. Army Cadet Command ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he was awarded the Scabbard and Blade Leadership Award.
Gauldin, a 1986 graduate of Northside High School, is a student at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.
AIR FORCE SENIOR AIRMAN MONICA R. BARNETT, daughter of Terry and Vicki Barnette and Linda Barnette of Roanoke, was recently decorated with the Air Force Achievement Medal. This medal is awarded for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments.
Barnett, a 1989 graduate of Northside High School, is currently a military personnel flight information manager at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma.

NAVY RESERVE SIGNALMAN 2ND CLASS NED SMITH recently participated in the 24th annual U.S. Baltic Operation, an international naval exercise involving NATO and Partnership for Peace members.
Smith serves with Amphibious Group Two at the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Roanoke.
ARMY CPL. TIMOTHY E. BOSTIC, son of Earl and Wanda Bostic of Roanoke, was recently promoted to his present rank. Bostic, a 1992 graduate of Northside High School, is a military police supervisor at Fort Bragg, N.C.
