The Rev. Cindy Barnum-Steggerda of Daleville has been named interim pastor of Central Church of the Brethren in downtown Roanoke. The graduate of Bethany Theological Seminary has also served the Troutville and Germantown Brick Churches of the Brethren in transitional times. She was co-pastor of Christian Church Uniting in Virginia Beach before coming to Botetourt County.

The Rev. Jeffrey Dorsey has resigned after four years on the staff of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church as its associate pastor. A church spokesperson said he has not announced his plans.

Ron Lowe has become organist and choir director at Fincastle Presbyterian Church. He has served as director of music at several Roanoke Valley congregations.

Lee Nitchman, a member of the Roanoke One Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has returned from a two-year volunteer mission in Prague, Czech Republic. The 1993 graduate of Patrick Henry High School will speak of his trip Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. worship service. He also attended Brigham Young University. Nitchman's parents are George and Jan Nitchman. |MUSICAL EVENTS| A Celebration of Singing will be presented Sept. 28 at 11:30 a.m. at Grandin Court Baptist Church, 2660 Brambleton Ave. S.W. The concert of sacred music will feature a choir of 75 singers under the direction of Dr. John H. Dickson, director of the choral group at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Music by several composers will be sung at the free program, which climaxes a training workshop for Baptist church musicians.

Ladies of Lee, a women's choir from Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn., will sing Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Penn Forest Church of God, 4429 Buck Mountain Road S.W. The free concert will be directed by Andrea Dismuker of the denominational college faculty. The choral group has traveled internationally.

Gary Fulsbakke, tenor soloist, will perform Sunday at 3 p.m. at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, 2330 S. Jefferson St.

New Grace, a Southern gospel group from Salem, will present special music Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. At Mason Cove Chapel off Virginia 311.

Children's Sabbaths, an observance on Oct. 18-20 in which members of Christian, Jewish and other religious faiths emphasize the spiritual and physical needs of children, will be sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley Inc. Materials to promote the observance are available free by calling 344-0931. The national promoter of Children's Sabbaths is the Children's Defense Fund.

REVIVAL MEETINGS

Two Salem churches, First Baptist and Shiloh Baptist, will unite for the 50th year in sponsoring a fall revival meeting Monday through next Friday. Services will begin nightly at 7:30 at First Baptist, 226 S. Broad St., Salem. The Rev. Solomon W. Wesley of St. John Baptist Church in Williamsburg will be guest preacher.

Cloverdale Church of the Brethren, 3515 Read Mountain Road, plans renewal services Sunday through Wednesday. They will begin at 11 a.m., with nightly worship starting with singing at 7:15. Guest evangelist will be Scott Beard of Summerdean Church of the Brethren.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Grandin Court Baptist Church has become the latest of several Roanoke Valley congregations to offer a contemporary style worship service at a time other than 11 on Sunday mornings. Commenting on the change, the Rev. Philip Motley, pastor, said the new 8:30 a.m. worship will augment the 11 a.m. traditional service and will be ``briefer, more informal and celebrative.'' Communion also will be received in a different manner. The two congregations will join at several times during the coming year to maintain fellowship.

Calvary United Methodist Church, 845 Hemlock Road, Salem, has begun a Wednesday night informal service starting at 6:30. The midweek gathering is especially for those who must work on Sunday, have been away from the church for a time or prefer ``an upbeat praise worship experience in a casual atmosphere.'' It will be led by Dave Carroll, a Christian singer. Call 344-6380 for more information.

Deaconess Day is planned Sunday at Loudon Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 730 Loudon Ave. N.W. Tawanda Fizer Penn of Big Hill Baptist Church will speak at 4 p.m.

Missionary Sunday will be observed Sept. 29 with a 4 p.m. program at First Baptist Church, 310 N. Jefferson St. Annette Lewis of Morning Star Baptist Church will speak. Music will be by the Voices of Deliverance and the Christian Praise Ensemble.
