POWELL POWER: It's been a while since Roanoke native Jane Powell's five-octave mix of jazz, soul and rhythm and blues has been heard around these parts.

HARVEST TIME: Downtown Roanoke Inc. will hold its annual family-oriented festival Saturday featuring music, dancing, pumpkin decorating, crafts, plus demonstrations of fading skills such as bobbin lace making and hand spinning.
Speaking of spinning, the Ferrum College Jacktale Players will spin tales and horse-drawn carriages will take you for a spin, all to raise funds and food for the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank.
The festival will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in Century Square, downtown Roanoke. Admission is free; but carriage rides cost three nonperishable food items (not packaged in glass) or $3.
A follow-up concert at 8 p.m. on the top floor of the downtown Roanoke Market Building will showcase After Six and Joey and the Jaguars to benefit the Roanoke City Mounted Patrol Unit.

COMFORT ZONES: Surround yourself with that warm, fuzzy, safe and secure feeling that only quilts can provide in varieties ranging from hand- to machine-made, novelty to antique, Saturday at the Legacy Quilt Show at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory. The "Quilt Show" on display through Nov. 10 at the Roanoke Valley History Museum in Center in the Square, Roanoke, is showing beautiful hand-stitched quilts, including some depicting historical Roanoke landmarks. STARS & SOUNDS: The Young Art Patrons of the Art Museum of Western Virginia will present their annual Skyline Jazz fund-raiser on Saturday from 5:30 p.m. - 11 p.m. on the lawn of the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.

STARS AND SAD SONGS: The mythological Orpheus' music moved mortals and gods alike. Sunday, three members of Opera Roanoke and a lutenist will perform excerpts from "L'Orfeo" against a backdrop of stars and constellations associated with the sad tale of Orpheus' love-driven challenge to the underworld.

ROUGH RAFTING: If you like a little thrill in your whitewatering, join the Roanoke Ski Club for a taste of the steep drops, mammoth holes, colossal waves and turbulent chutes of West Virginia's Upper Gauley River that earned it a ranking among the world's top 10 roughest waterways. FLAMENCO FANTASTICO: The 11-member Clarita and the Arte Flamenco Dance Theatre will exhibit the songs, stamps, claps and other mesmerizing movements of this emotional Spanish gypsy dance form on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Virginia Western Community College's Whitman Auditorium.
