STAUNTON RIVER SURVIVES 50-46

Erin Wolfe led the way with 21 points as Staunton River held on for a 50-46 victory over Jefferson Forest in a Seminole District game Thursday night in Forest.

Staunton River built a seven-point lead through three quarters. The Cavaliers tried to mount a comeback in the fourth, but came up short.

Kimmy Reeves got her only points on a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining in the game to cut the Golden Eagle' lead to three. The Cavaliers put Staunton River on the free-throw line, but they were able to knock one down to put away the game.

Codi Pollard led Jefferson Forest with 13 points.

Glenvar 39, Covington 26: The Highlanders took advantage of 14 percent field-goal shooting by the Cougars to notch a non-district victory in Covington.

The Cougars (5-3) made only eight of 58 shots from the field and scored no more than five points in any of the first three quarters.

Amy Layman had 18 points and Erika Hale added 14 for Glenvar (5-3).

Narrows 59, Grayson County 49: Suzanne Webb scored 16 of her 21 points in the first half to help the Green Wave (7-2, 2-0) hold off the Blue Devils (2-6, 1-1) in a Mountain Empire District matchup in Independence.

Tara Collins scored seven of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to help build on Narrows' 45-40 lead.

The Blue Devils cut their deficit to one point about midway through the fourth quarter, but were unable to overtake the Green Wave. Lindsey Carico led Grayson County with 21 points.

Lord Botetourt 73, Blacksburg 57: The Cavaliers took an early lead and survived a fourth-quarter comeback by the Indians to win a Blue Ridge District game in Blacksburg.

Lord Botetourt (7-1) finished the first quarter with a 20-5 lead. Sara Moore, who led the Cavaliers with 29 points, had nine in the period.

Blacksburg (3-6) cut its deficit to three points in the fourth quarter, but a combination of Indians turnovers and strong Lord Botetourt defense and free-throw shooting helped the Cavaliers pull away.

Aimee Bird finished with 11 points for Botetourt. Casey Beamer and Karly Geller led Blacksburg, with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Bassett 57, Tunstall 41: The Bengals scored the first 10 points and never looked back en route to an easy non-district victory over the Trojans in Dry Fork.

Heather Miller led Bassett (7-1) with 15 points, Megan Washburn scored 10 and April Merriman grabbed 12 rebounds.

Sherita Price provided the bulk of the Tunstall offense, scoring 22 points.

Rustburg 39, Liberty 30: The Devils won the first and third quarters decisively to notch a Seminole District victory in Bedford.

Leigh Akers and Hollee Franklin had 13 points each for Rustburg (5-1, 1-1), which broke open a close game by winning the third quarter 13-6.

Liberty (2-8, 1-1) got a team-high 10 points from Teona Callaham.

Patrick County 62, Dan River 8: The Cougars drilled the Wildcats in a non-district game in Stuart. Dan River sandwiched eight points between two bagels.

Patrick County (8-1) was led by Holly Weber, who poured in 20 points. Latoya Mckenzie led Dan River with six points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 65, Heritage 47: Carrie Quinlan scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half to lead the Cavaliers to a non-district victory over the Pioneers in Collinsville.

Lisa Clark contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers (5-4) who picked up their fifth consecutive victory after losing their first four games of the season. Tiffany Neamo added 10 assists to her five points.

The Pioneers were led by Amika Jordan and Kim Moss, who scored 20 points each.

Northside 52, Alleghany 38: The Vikings took advantage of the Mountaineers' foul trouble to win a Blue Ridge District game in Low Moor.

Point guard Katie Craft got into foul trouble in the third quarter and the Alleghany offense stalled.

Rosse Hopkins led Northside (7-1, 2-0) with 20 points. Craft finished with 11 points for the Mountaineers (5-2, 1-1).

Martinsville 65, Chatham 54: The Bulldogs dominated the middle two quarters to win a non-district game in Martinsville.

Tiffany Watkins had 16 points for Martinsville, which outscored Chatham 38-19 in the decisive second and third quarters by switching defenses and winning the rebounding battle.

Erica Brandon added 13 points and Monica Johnson had 12 for the Bulldogs (4-3).

Chatham (1-5) got 14 points from Claudia White and 10 each from Tena Daye and Lashonda Clark.

Fort Chiswell 84, Bland 28: The Pioneers rolled to a 56-point Mountain Empire District victory over the Rockets in Fort Chiswell.

A box-and-one defense by Bland held Amber Gunter to eight points and nine rebounds, but Amy Coleman picked up the slack with 16 points for Fort Chiswell (5-3).

Bland was led by Kelly Dunn, who scored 10 points.

Galax 74, Pocahontas 40: The Maroon Tide rolled to a 13-point lead in the first quarter behind the Indians' turnovers and swamped the hosts in a Mountain Empire District game.

Keisha Ayers led the way for Galax (3-3, 1-0) with 16 points and Erin Kyle and Tiffany Williams added 14 each.

Mandy Dawson and Pam Nunley had 10 points apiece for Pocahontas (1-4, 0-2).

William Byrd 57, Rockbridge County 23: The Terriers bolted to a 15-point halftime lead and cruised to a Blue Ridge District victory in Lexington.

Stephanie Parnell led William Byrd (7-1) with 12 points and Andrea Gay added 10.

Rockbridge County (0-8) got 10 points from Kate Ides.

Shawsville 69, Rocky Gap 38: Sophomore forward Megan Forester stole the show despite outstanding performances by teammates as the Shawnees breezed to a non-district victory over the Eagles in Shawsville.

Forester racked up 29 points, 16 rebounds and six steals for the Shawnees (7-2). Sarah Hagood added 18 points and 16 rebounds. Beth Burdette had 12 points, six steals and six assists.

Michelle Sarver scored 18 points, all from 3-point range. She hit five 3s in the fourth quarter.

Giles 77, Craig County 24: The Spartans led by 34 points at the half and dominated the Cavaliers in a non-district game in Pearisburg.

Giles (3-4) was led by Kristen White's 24 points. Teammate Erin Williams added 15 points. Craig County (0-8) was paced by Jody Harden with 11 points.

Laurel Park 61, Gretna 24: The Lancers (4-4) took control early and steadily pulled away behind Tiffany Lynch's 20 points to rout the Hawks in Martinsville.

Brandy Martin scored 19 points and Shermika Harris added 16 points and 13 rebounds for Laurel Park, which frustrated Gretna with its zone defense.

Crystal Boyd scored 10 points to lead the Hawks.

Magna Vista 55, Carroll County 40: The Warriors used a big second quarter to coast to a 15-point non-district victory over the Cavaliers in Ridgeway.

Hope Fulcher scored eight of her 10 points in the decisive period for Magna Vista (5-3). Sandi Reid led the Warriors with 16 points and Moranda Wade added 10.

Carroll County was paced by Tracey Leonard's 10 points.

Wednesday's game

Parry McCluer 53, Riverheads 48: The Fighting Blues rallied from 15 points down to win a non-district thriller in Staunton. Parry McCluer (4-4) was led by Nikki Barger with 18 points and Lindsey Coleman with 17. Riverheads' top scorer was Kara Hughes with 13.2.
