Gerald Beck of Lexington, N.C., was the leader Thursday after the first day of the Bassmaster Virginia Eastern Invitational fishing tournament at Lake Gaston along the Virginia-North Carolina border.
Beck weighed five bass totaling 20 pounds, 4 ounces, which put him 4 pounds, 4 ounces ahead of Mark Duerr of West Allis, Wis. Duerr weighed three fish.
Completing the top five at the event, which was moved from Kerr Reservoir because of flooding at the Virginia impoundment, were: Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala. (five fish, 15 pounds, 12 ounces); Ricky Diehl of Huntsville, Ala. (four, 15-7); and Danny Correia of Marlboro, Mass. (five, 14-7).
The big bass of the day, an 8-pound, 9-ounce fish caught by Gary Alverson of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., was worth $1,000.
The top Virginia angler with two days remaining in the tournament was Ivan Morris of Virginia Beach, who was 24th after weighing four fish totaling 10 pounds, 4 ounces. Other notable Virginia anglers and their totals: David Dudley, Lynchburg, 6 pounds, 11 ounces; and Woo Daves, Spring Grove, 2-14. Bill Watson of Christiansburg did not weigh a fish.
