EX-MARINE SENTENCED IN SHAKING STEPDAUGHTER'S DEATH GETS 6 YEARS

A man has been sentenced to six years in prison in the death of his 2-month-old stepdaughter.

Prince William County Circuit Judge Richard Potter suspended four years of the 10-year sentence he handed down Thursday to Kevin Eugene Holbrook. A jury on July 30 convicted the 22-year-old former Marine of involuntary manslaughter and recommended the 10-year maximum sentence.

Prosecutors had sought a second-degree murder conviction. They said Holbrook was angry and jealous that his wife of one month, Amber Dawn Dilbeck, had a child by another man.

Doctors testified that Hannah Leigh Dilbeck-Holbrook died Jan. 10 of severe brain damage after being violently shaken eight days earlier.

The defense said it was an accident. ``It was involuntary,'' Holbrook said at his sentencing.

Potter also sentenced Holbrook to five years of probation on his release. Holbrook, a Marine Corps private first class at the time of the infant's death, was discharged in July.
