Roanoke ad firm to plug binoculars

ITT Night Vision of Roanoke County, the major supplier of night-vision products to the U.S. military, said Friday it has chosen The Packett Group, a Roanoke advertising and public relations agency, to develop a national advertising campaign for the company's new civilian consumer product, Night Quest.

Packett has created a slogan - "The difference between night and day" - and a series of print ads for Night Quest, a device that resembles binoculars but is intended to help sportsmen rather than soldiers see in the dark. The ads, targeted at hunters and fishermen, are running in national magazines including Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and Bassmaster.

ITT Night Vision is a unit of ITT Defense & Electronics of McLean. The company formerly worked with Bear Advertising of Westlake Village, Calif. - Staff report

Construction set for subdivision

Olsa Corp. said it has begun construction of the first house in Emerson Pond Estates, a 17-lot subdivision located at the end of High Street in Salem.

The Salem company's principals are Jerry Holm and Custom Home Designs Inc. Holm is building the first house, but expects future buyers will purchase lots and have homes built by Custom Home Designs or other builders.

The subdivision will have a private pond for use by residents, along with sidewalks, old-fashioned street lamps and park benches.

The subdivision's deed restrictions mean houses must contain 2,400 square feet of living space and plans must be approved by the developer. Lot prices start at $42,000, and homes are expected to cost in the range of at least $260,000. - Staff report
