Vienna's Pat Tallent birdied the final two holes on Friday to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the 20th Virginia State Mid-Amateur Championship. Tallent shot a 69.
Tom McKnight of Galax was in second after firing a 71 on the 6,700-yard Augustine Golf Club course in Stafford.
Fieldale's Keith Decker, the defending champion and three-time winner, shot a 73 and is in fourth place, tied with three others.
Lexington's J.W. Entsminger fired a 74 to force a seven-way tie for fifth place.
Jake Allison, of Roanoke, was tied for sixth after a 75 and David Chalmers of Blacksburg and Jeff Lynch of Roanoke each shot 76s.
The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties after today's play for Sunday's title round.
* Andy Braddock shot a 1-under-par 70 to pace Liberty to an eight-stroke lead after the first 18 holes of the Washington and Lee Fall Golf Classic in Lexington. The Flames fired a 301. Roanoke is fourth at 319, Ferrum sixth at 321 and the Washington and Lee White team is eighth at 323. (Complete results in Scoreboard. B5)
* Byron Hall, a 6-foot, 185-pound guard from J.E.B. Stuart High in Falls Church, has committed verbally to Radford University, the Washington Post reported in Friday's edition.
Hall averaged 25 points per game as a senior and increased that to 29 per game during the Group AAA Northwestern Region tournament.
* The Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) make their third and final visit to Franklin County Speedway this year when the tour comes to Callaway tonight.
Jay Foley, who won the first SMART race at the track in October 1995, is locked in a tight points battle with Gary Myers and Frank Fleming. Myers leads the series, with Foley and Fleming tied 10 points back.
Gates open at 3 p.m., qualifying is at 6:30, and the first race at FCS takes the green flag at 8.
